Choosing between 2 NYC apartments

This is really the craziest apartment search ever. Maybe this is commonplace for NYC, but this is really strange.

So apparently another application went in a few hours after ours to the Chelsea place. The landlords liked him better since he could qualify by himself and wasn't using grants for law school as part of his qualification like we were. They were going to give it to him and he just had to pass the interview. Apparently he bombed it (how is this even possible?) which I found out as I was signing the papers for the Financial District place.

Now the lease is en route to my girlfriend for signing, and this other place in Chelsea says that we can have it if we pay 4 months up front, pay $500 to clean the place, move in between July 2 and July 8, and my girlfriend has to fly there to interview in person on Monday (going to be probably $800 on such short notice). Kind of ridiculous if you ask me, these landlords seem crazy. Not quite sure what to do yet, or if we can even get our first months rent/security back from the Financial District place with half of the lease signed.

This whole thing has been a ridiculous hassle.

Yeah finding housing in NYC is quite a hassle. That's why I've been in my same place for 6 years. Well that and it's hard to give up a rent stabilized apartment on the UWS.

forget the Financial district. YUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chelsea has it hands down but if you forget both, go look on the upper eastside. great neighbood feeling, great restaurants and shopping and the rents are usually a little lower in the 60's and 70's and you will find a doorman building maybe not with a gym but doorman anyway. try looking on nybits.com for rental buildings in the area. then just go door to door. Also call Rudin Management look them up they have 3 great buildings with great apartments and you wont pay a fee if you go directly through them. Good luck and forget down town

yes you can get your money back. you both did not sign so get it back and look elsewhere or take the Chelsea place. If you take my advice and call rudin management it would be safe to take an apt sight unseen. that is how reliable they are and how great their buildings are.
