Hi! This description is making me a bit confused - 5 gauge, 1,5 ply… would you say that this shirt has a quality that matches the price tag (approximately €240, although the site sells it for €570 to buyers with no membership in their club). Thanks !

Hard to say because quality depends on:
* quality of yarns
* quality of construction / expertise of maker
* Any treatments/care of garment, how much they wash it, etc.
* What it means to you i.e. some very fine fabrics are just not as durable under the elements or under heavy wear.

Never heard of this site, but Artwell is a large manufacturer of yarns. 5 gauge, 1.5 ply would mean it's a thick, loosely knitted sweater. At that price it's unlikely to be really high quality; kind of appears to be J-Crew tier i.e. good for a season but will pill and not age well.

Wanting to understand the rationale for your claim is not consumerist, but you do you.

asking for brands to prove rationale of national craft or technical prowess is patently consumerist . see below .

I honestly can't even think of a top US knitwear maker, so I'd be curious as well, not strictly as a consumer, but as someone interested in the clothing industry at large.

most of what gets posted in this threak is machine knit . if that is the basis for your understanding of 'maker' i'd point out that hand knitting is honest folk craft made dumb by machine logic . that's why in this thread people fawn over closeups of decreases . I have zero interest in feeding that nonsense .

I don't even know what that is lol. I am just honestly interested in the craft and if I am going to buy a sweater in the future and can support someone still involved in a dying craft like handknitting, all the better.
Kind of seems like you're being needlessly belligerent.

if you were honestly interested in the craft you'd learn it ( or at least learn about it ) instead you ask for brand recos .

there are 40 million handknitters in the US alone . 'dying craft' lmao .

also : lmao belligerent I answered a question and then declined to draw a brand map

So what's an example of a knitter you like that we could buy a sweater from. I personally don't want to learn knitting but I'm happy to support someone expert who makes good clothes.

I know you don't want to but you should spend an hour or two to learn . it will inform your taste and you will still be happy to support someone expert who makes good clothes .

so , I buy pottery . I buy it retail , I buy secondhand , and I buy it from the source .

i've never thrown a pot in my life . never will .

I prefer wood-fired studio stoneware . I pay money to acquire it . I know exactly what I am buying .

what am I missing here ? or are we just uneducated moneyed hicks ?

what do you think you are buying from say WL ? why is it worthwhile ?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
