It’s not worth getting an SNAD mark on your account, but you did say the buyer said there was a smell after you balked at accepting the return, right? A reasonably competent EBay CSR will see that as a clear case of buyer’s remorse.

How did she open the return? Is there a case already?

No SNAD case opened--yet. She requested a return, I said no, return case was closed, then she claimed there was an odor and threatened to open a case, presumably SNAD. And, yes, in her initial request for a return, she said the coat was beautiful (it is) and raised no issues other than it did not fit. After a half-hour on hold tonight, I sent a message to eBay via Report A Buyer, checking the Other box. Said I was requesting no action, just wanted to establish a record of what had happened and that I hoped that the matter was resolved. If it makes a difference, when she initially asked for a return, I called eBay and asked if there was any way to put her in touch with the second place bidder so that they could consummate a deal and everyone would end up good. Perhaps naive, but I thought I'd try. I told her I'd tried that when I declined the return--that's when she said the coat reeked and wasn't sellable. At that point, I checked and, sure enough, she sells stuff. Van Heusen shirts and other crap, all overpriced, that I wouldn't let my pug pee on. Someone who bought a pair of Dockers reported that they arrived covered in hair, just like this coat, so there's that.

Perhaps worrying too much and over-thinking this, but gosh darn it. I'm going to try giving the coat away locally, at a homeless shelter if necessary. And lesson learned: Never, ever, no matter what, deal in women's clothing.

So wait, she returned the coat without a return?

What would you sell this used Brooks Brothers - Generations of Style - Super 130 men's suit coat for?

The thrift store I bought it from listed it at over 4 times as much as the other suit coats. $45 buy. Wondering if I should return it or list it.

^^^ I clicked on your link. It shows a list of accepted and not accepted Brooks Brothers Labels. My label isn't on either list... I thought I heard that anything over a super 120 is good.

I wouldn't have paid $4.50 for that. Brook Brothers is ubiquitous in stores around here. Unless it is NWT or very special (model or material), I just lick my fingers and keep flipping.

Your label isn't on his list because it's sketchy as ****. How can an oddball blend be super 130 wool?

She formally requested a return, I refused. Here's what she wrote after I declined the return (contrary to her message, my listings clearly state that I don't take returns):

"Your details state you accept returns and so I am resending my request. I am unable to resell this coat as it smells as if it has been in a fire. There is a very distinct smell to this coat. Please accept this request for return. Let me know if you wish me to open a case."

That's when I sought guidance. People smarter than me advised that she'd probably win a SNAD, even after her initial request in which she wrote that the coat was beautiful but did not fit.

BB is rare here, but your point is a good one. Just sold a BB tweed sport coat that I had to relist four times. Still trying to break my BB shirt habit--the right ones fetch around $25, but it usually takes multiple re-listings. Only worth it if you can snag them for south of $5, which I can and do. $6 is about my limit for a BB sport coat, and only if it's mint and not made in Asia.

I’m confused. You got the coat back, right? In unsellable condition caused by her. Did you accept the return? Who paid for return shipping?

Yep, I took it back and refunded the money. We didn't discuss return shipping. She paid $13.65 and crammed it into a flat-rate box. I had sent it standard in a small U-Haul box for south of $10.

I really don't understand what the problem is. Get a lint brush, remove the cat hair, relist it. Or as you said, give it away and don't deal with womens clothing. What does it matter what she paid to ship it to you? You're not going to refund that cost to her anyway. If she complains about it, deal with it THEN, don't worry about it NOW.

Am I missing something? I really just don't understand.
