They basically told me to wait until he opens a return request. Should I respond to him in the meantime?

Good thing that he has a record. Maybe you can try to nicely ask him to provide some pictures, clarifying which is wrong with the tie and what he would like to do next. Maybe then you have an idea. Usually when you play nice and dumb, these guys quickly show their color :)

The last thing you could always tell him that you and eBay both knew his pattern. You will happy to provide a pre-paid return label and he'd better return the tie to get his money; or if something were to happen, you would report him to the local postal inspector, the local police in his area and also public online boards. This might not work with serial scammers as they've learnt that they're likely would get away, like 95%.

How should I fight this? Is telling him that every monitor displays color differently enough and would that protect me from a neg? This guy already has a note placed on him when I called eBay, by the way.

Is this the same turd you mentioned earlier, the guy clearly hunting for a discount post-purchase?

(If not, what's that asshat's handle? :D)

Don't do anything yet. If he messages you again, ask him to open a request. After that, ebay gives both parties x (forget if it's 3 or 5) business days to 'resolve' the situation before you can call in to have it closed in your favor. Always call. Use the term 'buyer's remorse' in your call.

For me, it used to be that the moment a buyer opened a frivolous return, I could call ebay right away and have the return escalated to a case, which they'd close on the spot. They've stopped doing that, and have told me they have to wait for a few days.

Thank you, will do. I'm just afraid he'll just leave a negative without opening a case.

Would you remove these tags with the donor's name on them? They aren't size tags so figure I'll chop 'em unless you guys have a better idea.

No, the one on the left attributes it to Southwick, and the one on the right to its recency.

Just make an agreement in advance about the price you will honor on each item, have him make you that offer on each one, then send him an invoice with the shipping adjusted per your agreement. He has to hold off from paying the individual items from the automated eBay invoices, and wait for the combined one you send him.

I should note that 50% of the time, buyers screw this up, despite careful instructions, and I end up having the do a partial shipping refund via PayPal. Sigh.

Ok, thank you kindly. I'm not even gonna bother with this on two $20-15 jeans. Pass for me! They eventually will sell separately.

caveat, I generally don't add non payers to the list, and part of the list is from the blocked list file with no explanation of why they're on it, so some might be vendetta blocking. I've never had anyone message me about being blocked that I didn't want to keep on the list. YMMV

Here's a winner for y'all. All I did was question how he was measuring the chest, as he was claiming that my measurement was 6 inches off (TWSS).

Update on this one. Homeslice didn't return the jacket within a week. You better believe that was the first thing I dealt with this morning. I'd literally just finished shaving when the EBay rep came on the line.

Question about record keeping:
Historically I've tracked the price I paid for each individual item and where I purchased it. I do this at the same time I assign a SKU to each item. However, I also scan every receipt, and have GoDaddy accounting tracking every payment I make, and I'm thinking I don't need to take all that time to record the price paid for each item.
What do you guys do? Is there any situation in which you would need to know the exact cost of each item you sell?

To those that know anything about coding:

I've mentioned this before, but I had never done/seen/read about anything until I wanted to add tables to my listings. I fumbled my way through it last fall and made a few tables and some formatting changes inside GarageSale.

I needed to fix things/make changes and waited until I shifted over to GS 7. When my brother-in-law was over, I was horrified to see one of my listings on his computer. For starters, my font didn't work on his. I have Copperplate as my font in the listings, but I now know why it won't work on PC (font families).

I have only Apple stuff, so I had never thought to look at it elsewhere. I've tried a few simple remedies for a fix, but they have all failed. I probably won't understand any solutions you provide, so my question is this:

Is this a "simple" job for someone that knows what they're doing? As in, could I simply copy/past the code I'm using for one of my templates and explain the problem and they'd be able to fix it? Or is this a giant headache for someone to do? I'm naive, so I assumed taking care of a font issue would be easy, but I could be wildly incorrect.

You're looking for the <table>, <td>, and <tr> tags. If you duplicate listings a lot, you should only have to set it up once and be (fairly) good to go.

Quick reference:
* <table> and matching </table> are your opening and closing table tags
* <tbody> and matching </tbody> are the opening and closing tags for the main table body (and yes, that is kinda redundant considering you have to wrap everything in <table></table> anyways)
* <tr> and matching </tr> are your opening and closing table row tags
* <td> and matching </td> are you opening and closing cell tags (I think td was originally for "table data").

HTML tags works in a nesting fashion. (...Basically) all tags require closing tags. So if I switch the main view on GS7 from Preview Mode to Editor Mode

I get a view that looks like this:

Notice the <table></table> section of that code is in a format similar to the below:

HTML:
<table>
    <tbody>
        <tr>
            <td>first row, first cell</td>
            <td>first row, second cell</td>
        </tr>
        <tr>
            <td>second row, first cell</td>
            <td>second row, second cell</td>
        </tr>
    </tbody>
</table>

Once you get the table layout how you want inside the code view, just duplicate that listing repeatedly and from then on only edit a listing in the Preview Mode. When I duplicate my dress shirt template listing for a shirt, I get:

Similarly, I have a sortof "really nice shirt" template which I'll duplicate for shirts that I've actually taken the time to fully measure out. That looks more like this:

The table code for the above is:

HTML:
<table class="“measurements”">
    <tbody>
    <tr>
        <td>Marked shirt size:</td>
        <td>L</td>
    </tr>
  <tr>
        <td>Chest (measured flat from pit to pit):</td>
        <td>24.625”</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td>Shoulder:</td>
        <td>20.625”</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td>Sleeve (measured from top of shoulder seam to cuff tip):</td>
        <td>24”</td>
         </tr>
    <tr>
        <td>Back of collar to hem:</td>
        <td>32.5”</td>
         </tr>
    <tr>
        <td>Pocket?:</td>
        <td>Yes</td>
    </tr>
</tbody>
</table>

That's the basic organization. There's far, far, more that you can do (like disappearing cell borders, table borders, interior cell padding, margins, stretching when it fits small screens)... but that gets into the fiddly part of HTML and requires using CSS (think of HTML as the framing for a building and CSS as the paint), and I do not like making my own CSS work with ebay. Because ebay needs standardization (and to not end up looking like old myspace pages), they force you to write CSS in a way that is so, so, so inefficient compared to how you write CSS for web pages anywhere else.

(EDIT) I didn't mention why ebay's roundabout way is actually a pain **********: any CSS that you write must use either inline styles, or be explicit through classes and IDs to the HTML element you're trying to 'paint' with CSS. Said a simpler way, expect HTML code to work 90% of the time when writing for ebay, expect CSS code to work 30% of the time if you're trying to adapt CSS tutorials from around the net to ebay templates. It's an infuriating environment to learn CSS in.

If you don't ever get really, really deep into it, then just remember that under the hood much of the stuff GS is doing to give you the level of control it does with is amazing.

The thing I've found with damn near any programming language is that you forget which tags/keywords/method/functions names all the time. I often use this site as a resource for HTML stuff. Linked is the section on tables.
