Colombia is way safer than mexico these days, but as always, there are areas you just shouldn't go. I think i'm gonna head down after xmas myself. I have a bunch of lieu days piled up and I need to use them within a certain time and I want to do something where i can just chill out that won't cost me too much money. Was considering brazil too but i don't speak any portuguese so colombia might be more fun travelling solo.

basically , countries and banks all have anti laundering legislations in place. Your MIL's account probably triggered a red flag due to the size and frequency of transactions. Some monkey on a keyboard had a look, adn escalated it. Then bank finds it materially suspicious and wants to close down your MIL's account, as they are entitiled to. TOo bad, find a new bank.

And if she was "buying vehicles" or anything over 10K, it raises suspicion!
FYI...that "she is Columbian cause her mother is columbian" was a funny comment!

Sounds about right. Seems to be the bank's effort to comply with "Know Your Client" rules against money laundering.

we've gone several times, and will go again next summer. I find it perfectly safe for gringos, the people in danger are the afluent local people.

more of the trouble is that I don't want to take all our vacations there. but it is a beutiful place

makes sense. I jsut don't want to get dragged into anything - I don't want to have to prove to anybody that we are clean, the cost of proving it would probrably be high.


GQ - my wife is part of the jewish colomian community, and she moved to israel when she went to college.
