I think convincing someone to drop $800+ for a first pair of shoes is always going to be a tough sell. Get something cheap to start with. And as you appreciate more shoes, and understand what your tastes are, spend more. It’s the same with anything menswear. Foxy is a cautionary tale.

What size are you?

I would say at your price range, Thomas George collection is probably the best option.

Take it from someone who spent a lot and went from Loake to Edward Green & Crockett. Something like the Thomas George collection is great value until you know exactly what you want etc.

Alternatively there are some places that sell second hand shoes where you might get some great deals depending on your size.

So I'm looking at blown-up pics of Old Sydney on a construction site hoarding in Castlereagh St. Some old bloke in a natty DB chalkstripe suit starts talking to me - "here's the building where my great-grandfather started our family business" etc.

We had a nice chat and then he introduces himself: John Cutler. Well, who woulda thunk it. Lovely bloke. They've just moved to the Trust Building on the corner of King and Castlereagh - same building as my alterations tailor Fridon, funnily enough. (Just tailors and jewellers in that building it seems.)

At $6000+ for a suit, I won't be turning up for a basted fitting any time soon. But I did warm to the man.

John’s a good man. My menswear obsession probably started with the suits he made for my father when I was growing up.

Unfortunately he’s well beyond my budget. Last time I ran into him I mentioned this, and he tried to sell me on his protégé’s MTM starting at $3k...

Whiskey shell cordovan derbies from Alfred Sargent

Sz8UK too small for me unfortunately (I'm usually an 8.5 in most things)

Worn 10-12 times . Has some water spotting as light coloured shell cordovan can do - hopefully you have more patience than I do for brushing, and they should disappear
