While I appreciate that one can find the occasional watch thread on SF, the fact is that SF really isn't specifically a watch place.

Watches are men's jewelry and a style accessory. Discussing them on SF is just as appropriate as discussing cufflinks or umbrellas. In my humble opinion of course.

SF concerns itself with a fairly wide variety of topics pertaining to men's style, fashion, and accessories. Whereas a wristwatch-specific site focuses narrowly on just wristwatches, often reviewing and critiquing them in far greater depth and from a considerably more detailed perspective than does SF. It's a matter of the generalist vs. the specialist. Both approaches are valid, but they are not necessarily interchangeable.

However, completely ignoring that fact, I would suggest that to whatever extent timepiece discussion may be legitimate on SF (and it admittedly does have its place), a question along the lines of "Which watch should I get?" is probably better posed in a wristwatch-specific thread (perhaps a thread of its own, started by the person asking for advice), than it is being tossed into the "Ask a Question, Get an Answer" thread. The "Ask a Question, Get an Answer" thread is more intended to address "quick questions," and discussions of wristwatch selection often turn out to lead to somewhat protracted discussion.

This is, of course, a context dependent thing, and not an iron rule. If someone posts pictures of two watches, and asks, "Which of these, my two watches, do you think would go better with my navy suit, when I interview for a junior associate's position at Big Law Firm, tomorrow?" I could certainly accept that it's a quick question, and entirely appropriate for inclusion in this thread.

Has anyone had ties shortened? What is a fair price?

I have a few that I like which are too long.

I have half a mind to just lop 4" off the thin blade and run a stitch across it so it doesn't fray.

The primary reason for the watch would be after work/weekends however I would like it to be versatile enough to wear to work as well.

I love dive watches as a 'kick it' kinda watch, but I'm afraid that most are not going to work 'appropriate'.

my tailor keeps giving me grief about bringing in shirts with pleats on the back. she says it is much harder to alter and it increases cost (around $30/shirt).

what is the reason for that? does that make any sense or should i find a new tailor? she comes highly recommended via yelp if that means anything.

Based on my experience from ordering things from Europe and Japan to be delivered to the States my answer would be "depends." If the item is packaged and labeled in such a way that it is clear to the shipper and customs that the merchandise is new then the answer is "yes, you will be charged;" if, on the other hand, the item is packaged as if it were a gift or simply not new merchandise then the answer would be "no, you will not be charged."

I think most of the time people will not pay attention to your watch. Timex is even work appropriate for some people.

It sounds to me like she wants a reason to charge you $30 more. I've yet to find yelp to be right about anything of consequence. Got the least enjoyable hot shave of my life from the city's highest recommended barber for shaves.

You could say the same about shoes. And shirts. Who notices the difference between bespoke savile row and an ordinary shirt that was altered? Few people I work with. But I know which I'd get if money was no object.

It's hard to wear a Timex if you've owned something nicer.
