Alterations Tailor in Downtown Toronto

I had some shirts taken in by the guy at Magic Tailor, which is across from the eaton's center. I have read that he used to be the head alteration tailor at the Bay.

On my shirts he took in the sides and slimmed the sleeves down. That was $25/shirt. He indicated that darting alone would have been around 15.

I would hazard a guess that north york would have cheaper tailors then downtown.

The guy at Magic Tailor is pretty good. I have had him do my stuff for about 2 years now and it has all turned out well.

Paid $25 to slim down a shirt, and $15 for darts (same as the poster above).

Is that expensive? I have only had him do a few shirts due to the high cost.. I can order a new shirt from Modern Tailor for ~$40-50 so it makes little sense to take in a 2yr old shirt and pay $25 to have it tailored.

Yeah $25 to slim a shirt is borderline not worth it to me. But sounds like this place does a pretty decent job. I got a few shirts to do, so maybe there's a discount for multiple items.

Thanks for the help so far. Any other recommendations?

The dry cleaner in Commerce Court has a significant alterations business. They do a pretty good job but can be expensive.

I just submitted a project to Antonio's shop in the Collonade (Bloor/Avenue) -- slimming a jacket through the side seams and shortening sleeves. Quoted price is $65 slimming and $45 sleeves -- pretty steep, but it's an expensive jacket and he's done excellent work in the past. Will post "after" pics.

Any after pics?

I need significant work done on an Isaia shirt, Gucci blazer and Zegna suit. Have used Magic Tailor in the past with mostly good results, but was considering giving Antonio a shot.

I got a similar challenge with a BB sport shirt that could use some taking in from regular (traditional) to somewhere 3/4 towards BB slim fit. I'm out Oakville way in the west end of the GTA, anyone know of a good tailor in my neck of the woods?

I just gave him a Pal Zileri SC for some work too, so I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

On a side note, I was sold a BNWT Armani Collezioni suit (my first mistake) from a very well know ebay seller. When I took it to Antonio's for alterations he noticed that it was already heavily altered (and in a very sloppy way). I returned it to the seller for a full refund, but would have probably kept it if Antonio didn't notice the many flaws in the suit.

I have quite a few reviews for local alterations tailors:

Alien Designs on Yonge north of Wellesley did a poor job on my slimming my sleeves. He cut corners and didn't slim it all the way down and open up the seem at the cuff, he just stopped about an inch before the cuff, causing the sleeve to blouse-out slightly before coming back in at the cuff.

Antonio's is better but he doesn't do the work himself, just the two tailors he has working there and they cut corners on slimming my pants. They took in from one side only and ironed in a new crease. Not impressed for the price; however, they did a good job slimming the waist on my wife's jeans, a very clean alteration.

Cornelliu's in Hazelton lanes is pretty good. It's hard to articulate exactly what you want done to the tailor. Don't let the name fool you, it's owned now by a Korean fellow and his wife. Both are very nice but I'm scared to take really complicated things to them. He does do excellent work slimming shirts because he puts the proper stitch back into the shirt, he doesn't just sew a single seem down the side. I've taken many of my shirts here.

Xavier's Custom Tailor on St. Mary just south of Bloor is the best of the bunch. He is priced inline with the other tailors and does better work. He is easy to talk too and is comfortable with fashion forward ideas. He is now go-to place for alternations. He's done simple things for me like pant hemming/trimming and jacket sleeve adjustments, all the way up to the complicated stuff like jacket shortening and rise adjustment on pants.

The alteration you mention any cleaner who do alteration can do. Also if you buy the pant at Harry Rosen , you can ghet the alteration done for free, one the store is in Bloor St.
Anyone can "do" the alternation but most people won't do it vary well. Lots of cheap places cut corners and do it sloppy; you get what you pay for. Also, Rosen will only hem pants and take in/out the waist, they won't trim the trouser for free.

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone can give me a price quote of taking in the waist of a Gucci blazer I have from a good tailor you have experience with. I purchased this blazer about a week ago. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/250920239713?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I paid 50$ for the blazer and it's a 42R but I usually wear a 40R and sometimes even a 38R in certain designers. I live in Pickering but since it's an expensive jacket at retail, I would be willing to pay a bit more and possibly travel downtown to get a nicely done alteration. Thanks for any help with this.

For $50 jacket its not worth driving all the way to downtown Toronto for a tailor. It's not like you are getting a bespoke suit made and you need the best of the best, you just need simple a alternation that nearly anyone will be able to do...although making a 42 look good on a 38 may not be simple.

I can't say enough about Studio Kim. I take everything to her.

I've used Magic Tailor too but Studio Kim is my go to.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
