Wow! That is an impressive shell collection What are some of the subjective differences you see/feel between the two companies when it comes to shells? Seems to me the price of shell between AE and Alden is similar and Alden has more availability in terms of colors.

What are some of the subjective differences you see/feel between the two companies when it comes to shells? Seems to me the price of shell between AE and Alden is similar and Alden has more availability in terms of colors.

Zenny, I personally prefer the Alden shell cordovan treatment to that of AE. With that said, AE had don't a lot to improve over their shell treatment during the last two years. Alden is second to none in their shell treatment. There are others here who will prefer AE Shell.

I really love the AE Walnut Shell Cordovan, which I consider to be sort of between Whiskey and Ravello. I actually prefer AE's Walnut to Whiskey or Ravello. It is a shame that they will no longer stock it. My Walnut Shell Strands are my favorite of all of my shoes in terms of color, designs, shape, and fit.

Although Alden "has" more colors, Whiskey, Ravello, and Cigar are called rare colors and for good reason. They are very hard to get, more so right now. The only way to get them is to establish relationships with the retailers and be patient. Their normal stable is just Black and Color 8 (Burgundy).

On the other side, AE regularly stocks Black, Burgundy, and Brown. All of which are readily available. I typically have to treat AE shell before I consider it to be acceptable.

Just some thoughts, everyone has their own opinions. Also, unfortunately, I have only showed you a fraction of my Shell stable.

I recently grabbed a pair of walnut Dalton seconds. The only discernible "defect" is a much darker burnishing on the right boot. I am ok with how it is but would like to try to even them out as it seems other have had success doing similar on here.

Are there any good guides to adding my own burnishing or any sage advise anyone could float this way? I would prefer to darken the left boot rather than lighten the right. Any polish suggestions for going about this based on the walnut boot coloration? I read some sources saying the walnut polish can darken the boots to some extent.

I went to the AE store today. It was quiet a nice experience. The color difference between what is shown online on AE website and the actual store is like day and night. Alot of the color seems to be lighter and more watched out (Brown, burgendy). Would darker polish fix that?

Turns out depending on the last I need two different sizes. I am amazed how you guys can buy online and get satisfying color or fit lol.

Too bad I cant use the deal on Amazon to get 20% off because I didnt sign up 10 days before .

It's very disappointing, but the online photos are not very good. IMO the shoes look much better in real life. After a few visits to an AE store, I became comfortable with the product lines, fit, color, and material. Then I started ordering by phone from an AE store. Short answer, with some experience you will become more comfortable and confident ordering AEs without trying them on.

I was gonna ask the same question. I tried to order on Friday night, they were online, but would not allow me to put them in my cart. Yesterday morning, they were't even on the website. What gives? I could use a few pairs....
