Segue, but finally got a piece of art for our family room. Painter is Sigrid Sandström. I don't love all her stuff but this one just struck me. (And fit well.)

Now just waiting on some shelves for the alcove next to the chimney and a proper rug. Probably also need a nicer fireplace door/screen -- maybe something in bronze or brass?

Nice. But I think it's a little too big for that spot. Plus, you got some symmetry going on with the fireplace design, which is thrown off by the fact that the space around all four sides of the painting isn't the same width. Would it fit in the space next to the fireplace?

Also, if you're going to put shelves there, three higher shelves is enough. Otherwise area is too crowded.

Just got word that our house sale has closed (we signed the contracts yesterday). This feels like a huge weight off my shoulders after the problems we’ve had: I had to clear out a bunch of branches after the last big snowstorm, and we had to replace the sewer main because there was a belly (sag) in the line. Fortunately, that was covered under warranty, but was a huge pain to deal with. I did reseed the scar.

We want to do something modern. An 'eco-friendly' design. I want the design to echo some of the historical architecture in the area. I really like it when houses take into account the place they are.

Good luck! If this is your first one you are going to learn that it's a bigger job than you realize and it's very difficult to get all the details right. Going full custom is both a blessing and a curse as you get to build exactly what you want, including dumb design choices that you might regret later. But at the end the result will be very satisfying and it will be worth your money and time.

I worked with a sh1t ton of guys who built their own homes. I even considered it myself, I did some additions, converted a garage and gutted a bathroom myself while working full time + but never a new home. The general reaction I remember from most who did it was "I built my ex wife a house "

I deserve it. I give him a hard time (even though I think it should be my right as a native born citizen).
