Soft/medium hold recommendation for long wavy/straight asian hair?

I've had short hair (< 2" on top) for most of the past decade, but for the past year, I've been growing out the top. It's probably at about 5" right now. The hair on top isn't super straight. It's probably either wavy or somewhere between wavy and straight.

I've never really used hair products before, other than trying gel a few times when I was a teen (I'm now almost 30), and try out the American Crew Firm Hold Grooming Cream and suavecito Firme hold a few times the past year. I don't like these two creams. It "hardens" (not sure if that's the right term?) my hair. I want to be able to run my fingers through it and have it remain soft but formable.

Should I go for a firm or medium hold?

Does anyone have recommendations on actual products to try?
