In my years of fountain pen collecting this is by far the best deal I've come across. Paid $600 for a 1990s solid platinum 950 Montblanc 144 on TRR. Has solid 18kt yellow gold clip and fittings too. Full set of boxes and papers never inked or used. Just the nib size sticker removed. Current solid platinum Montblanc 149 retail is $18,500, so I'd guess current solid platinum Montblanc 144 retail is $11k-$13k if there are any left at Montblanc HQ. I know the 144 model was replaced with the 145 favoring a screw cap instead of push cap. But I do not believe a solid platinum 145 was ever made. Have a call out with my Montblanc boutique to learn more.

Check out the last pic for some double PT950 goodness. 144 + 149 😎

I can’t fathom how anyone would be compelled to spend $600 on a pen, let alone $18k. I don’t even remember the last time I spent my own money on a pen, I get all of mine from hotels, reception desks, etc. lol. I get wanting something nicer than a promotional bic or whatever, but $18k is absolutely absurd to me.

I have a $40 pen that is more than nice enough. I’d love to find a $600 or $18k pen at thrift prices to flip, or maybe just for writing item numbers on tags.

Different strokes for different folks one might say. Same goes with watches, cars or any other goods that target luxury segments. I don't know if you collect watches but Rolex, PP, Vacheron, AP, Omega, Cartier all get beat out by a $20 Casio if you're just looking for a watch to tell the time accurately and consistently. Yet the Veblen goods market thrives.

The 144's melt value of its platinum and gold alone is worth more than $600. The kicker is I know I can sell this pen for $5k tomorrow. Enough of a compelling reason for me.

congrats. wild how many people tout trr as the ultimate consignment destination, and how they’re so careless/ignorant sometimes they’re basically just boujee Linda’s stuff.

I mean, it’s platinum and 18k, so it’s basically like buying yourself a functional piece of jewelry. 18k is inexpensive compared to some buccellati jewelry.

I have a few meisterstucks I inherited, and there is definitely a difference in feel when compared to bic or cross. if you write a lot by hand, a standard meisterstuck isn’t a terrible investment.

a bespoke passoni titanio or i9 hydra hub w 690 points of engagement is way overkill for the casual weekend rider, or even serious hobbyist, but if that’s a hobby that distracts you from the doldrums, live la dolce vita.
