Haven’t rent in a while but think everything went up decent amount so doubt there are much bargain near by all just comparatively cheaper. I would say just be realistic about your budget, small apartment if you’re single and expect to be out and about most of the time anyway

@King Calder timing is tricky. Most of the moves happen in the summer between June and September. A lot of units wouldn’t become vacant in April. I suggest being flexible with your move date (look at June and July) and find something temporary in between.

I’ll also say that it is incredibly hard to find a great place while not being in town to jump on it quickly, or have somebody doing it for you.

Longshot but does anyone have any advice for moving to the city? I am moving to NYC in April and am totally flabbergasted by the (1) high prices on the (2) slim stock of apartments right now. Looking on sites like Streeteasy and Zillow, I've never lived in NYC before so I am feeling super intimidated about how to find a place that totally doesn't destroy my budget.

What's your budget?

I was hoping to stay around 2500 but I can begrudgingly afford up to ~3K. (Sorry @gdl203, comes out of the clothing budget lol) I'm hoping to keep a car somewhere so looking primarily at Brooklyn and Queens. I am starting to open very quickly to the idea of roommates and/or living further out (office in in lower manhattan)

@gdl203 a friend of mine has offered to put me up in Westchester temporarily while I find a place so I can be looser on timing, I was thinking of trying to avoid the summer rush but maybe more stock will become available towards the summer too...

If you’re going to be really in the city I would just not bother with car, I really never need it until kid and even then it was a nice to have

$2500 you can do pretty well in Brooklyn and Queens in nice areas too. I don’t know what your accustomed to, but you should be able to get nice, but small one bedrooms without an issue.

-You absolutely don't need a car in NYC.
-Brooklyn, where I live may be a possibility, though prices are still steep.
-I would absolutely want to get a feel for the neighborhood prior to moving.
Some key elements: laundry & dry cleaners/bodega or corner store access/proximity to the subway/quiet/grocery store nearby/some venues too kick back(bar/restaurants/takeout)/etc.

Good luck!

Thank you guys for all the perspective. FWIW my main recreational activity is climbing outdoors so I'm really attached to being able to get out and climb, and the new england bouldering is one of the reasons I justified moving there to myself lol. too bad my office is in manhattan =(

It sounds like your preferred lifestyle is at serious odds with NYC. Getting in and out of NYC is never swift, unfortunately.

Ok if you must need a car you would need to figure out parking situation, garage is not cheap in NYC even in Queens, street parking is possible just not easy and you got to move all the time

Lots of climbers and boulderers in NYC actually - even Central Park itself has multiple spots. Of course you have various clubs for indoor/winter (Steep Rock, Vital, the Cliffs)

Best to get in and out of the city quickly is to live in Upper Manhattan near the FDR (either West side or East side). We get to our place in northern Westchester (45 miles away) in 1 hour door-to-door because we can hop onto the FDR or Harlem River Dr within 5 minutes.

LIC or Astoria in Queens may be good spots for you: the Cliffs nearby and pretty easy zip out to the North East via Throgs Neck Bridge

LIC/Astoria/Roosevelt Island, though definitely figure out parking, the garage I go to use to be pretty empty ish pre COVID (you can walk in and got a spot), now post COVID there is like 300 waiting list (though I imagine some have moved on just hasn’t bothered to take themselves off the list)

I’ve never done it, but Queens to Lower Manhattan seems like a slog. Is JC or Hoboken an option? That puts you on the right side of the river for The Gunks.
