Question regarding getting a polo shirt tailored

Just bought a ralph lauren polo shirt. One of these, to be precise: http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/i...entPage=family

Anyways, I bought a medium, and I understand that not every small/medium/large/etc. will fit every guy perfectly. This shirt fits me, and looks fantastic, though I am unsure on the length, and am unsure if I should get the length tailored.

I wear the shirt casually, so I wear it untucked. When untucked, the back entirely covers my butt, and the front goes to about when the legs are noticeably separating when wearing pants. Past the zipper (don't know the technical terms of pant areas, sorry).

Looking at pictures of guys wearing this kind of shirt untucked, their shirts seem to end mid-zipper, or a bit slightly higher. Covering the belt.

So, I'm wondering if I'm right on the idea that it's slightly too long, and if I'm right on the thought of getting it tailored and made slightly shorter.

My mother thought it looked good, and was all "That's how everyone wears it", but I live in very small town where most people wear their shirts longer than they really should. Father thinks I should get extra large shirts, because that's how a lot of my people typically wear them. (I'm African-American). I'm sure most people here can agree a lot of urbanists look pretty messy with their dress styles?

Any input would be great -- I'm a novice at this fashion stuff. Thanks.

Can you even get polo shirts tailored? Its a casual shirt not a dress shirt, there is no real reason to have it tailored.

I called around my town and a business was willing to shorten it for a small fee. I just want it a bit shorter, if it even needs to be shorter.

Do you think, from my descriptions, that the size sounds all right, and nothing extreme? I find presentation important, which is why fashion interests me (plus I use to be a web designer, so putting colors together is fun to me anyhow), so I do not wish to come off to people as a slob if my shirt is too long.

Could you post a picture of you wearing it?

If we see a picture, we could comment.

(A polo shirt that covers the butt does seem too long)

For my frame, the standard RL polos are too long to be worn untucked. The Custom-Fit RL polos are better for wearing untucked (and in fact are too short for me to wear tucked). Rather than tailoring your polos, I would try on a number of different brands until you find one that fits you well and has a good length that can be worn either tucked or untucked (for me that is the Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece Slim Fit).

Good tip. I'll try and get a picture in a little bit to showcase how long it is.

I live in a very small town so it's tough for me to find a large amount of good quality polos to try on.

I think it looks fine. I prefer it to what it would look like short.

You can get made to measure polo shirts at Tailor Store, but for alterations on existing polo shirts, I don't know.

To my eye, it doesn't look bad, but might look better a tad shorter. However, the shirts shrink after washing so I'd wash it a few times and then see if you like the length.

It's not TOO bad, but thats generally how classic fit RL polos fit. try getting Custom fit polos next time.

But it is possible to alter the length of it. It's actually not hard at all. It's a simple cut and fold and overlock which anyone who deals with clothes can do.

I also recommend the custom fit. It's shorter and fits better.
