I'd say M all the way. I'd personally given up on fatigues as the design of the pockets doesn't really seem to work for me, but that fit makes me wanna grab a pair!

No side tabs on them.

Do they have the internal drawstrings like the fatigues (and a lot of their other pants, too) from the last couple seasons?

I think I'm similar to you in sizing. I could do a S but I prefer the M with the waist drawstring cinched tighter. It's come in handy after big meals and with some pandemic weight gain.

They have a drawstring and I’m usually wearing a belt anyways. I’m going to give the mediums a wash and dry and go with those.

If after a a few hot washes and hot dry's you still feel they're too big, have a tailor remove the belt loops on either side of the back of the trouser, sew in 1" darts in the waistband and resew the belt loops back over the darts.
