They‘re probably better than you think, as your tailor suggests.

First, iron the shirts. Then, tuck the shirt tails completely into your pants. Those two things will “correct” many of the problems.

Some years ago, I put a fair bit of effort into custom-made shirts, with several remakes. I wasn’t satisfied with the results and went back to off-the-rack. Lately, I tried one of those old shirts again and was surprised at how well it fit. I think that when we pay for custom work, we look at the result extra-critically.
