You got it! It was a real joy to hang in the showroom last winter with Kori, the sales rep that we've been in touch with for so long. Kaptain Sunshine is really one of those brands that can have such a different vibe depending on how you buy it (Monitaly also falls in this camp) so it was nice to really be among the racks of everything they produce and get a feel for all of it in one place.

Since there was already some talk about it, we should kick off with the Traveller coat. Same silhouette and details we love but this season's is a little lighter than some others, but softer. It's a double-faced melton wool with some contrast in all three colors we stocked. It's a nice touch and all of the inside colors are complementary and tasteful with the outer.

The other piece of outerwear comes in a fabric that was a highlight of the season, a new cotton/linen duck. I know when you think of duck canvas you think of stiff, heavy-duty, and something to be broken in, but in true KS form this one has a lot more going on. It's almost fluffy with the irregularity and softness of the yarns, and gives the look of a well-worn and washed cotton duck but feels much softer than even a broken in typical duck. The goat suede collar is a nice touch and further cements this as a much more highbrow take on a classic style.

Continuing the cotton linen duck program are some painter pants in the other colors offered, and these of course have everything we love about the fabric as well. Wide, straight leg feels good to wear and is easy to pair with the roomier tops.

Our guy above is wearing one of the tees we picked up, which is superlative as KS does. Tubular, Suvin Supima cotton, you know the drill. White and navy. So freaking nice.

Rounding things out are a few more trousers. The first are the usual side tab / two pleat joints but in a really rich garment dyed cotton, and the second are an easy pant style in a really special corduroy. Super long staple cotton (of course), then tumble washed for softness and extra depth to the color.

Will you be carrying the pants in size 36?

I know it sucks - they're not the only ones though. We can't truly plan our season anymore. Plenty of styles get canceled, size runs get modified, stuff gets delayed by months... it's just all very strange, but we have to go with the flow

Are the reasons mainly pandemic-related, or are they more about ongoing structural shifts in menswear?

Aftermath of the pandemic, primarily. Related to availability of materials and labor throughout each step of the supply chain. Yarn colors disappear, some places are under-staffed and delay everything... not to mention logistics issues. We've never had as many lost boxes, crushed boxes, repackaged stuff as in the last few months.

One of our makers lost all of the hats they made. Another just informed us that 70 boxes of knitwear (their whole knitwear collection for the season) cannot be found.

I’ll try the 34 and hope the work.

I'm a bit confused about how lost boxes are part of the aftermath. May you elaborate on why that is?
I understand delays due to shipping/ manufacturer reasons.

I think that the carriers' operations are in awful shape - and I'm not sure if that's because of personnel turnover, increased volumes or other factors. UPS, Fedex, DHL - all of them. They destroy packages like they're filled with Covid virus or something. Never seen so many boxes completely shredded, wet, repackaged. It is clearly a recent phenomenon. Sometime we get 7 out of 8 boxes and it takes 3 weeks to get the 8th one.

And we're lucky compared to the ones I mentioned. 70 boxes missing ?

For all of those businesses, the seesaw effect of a demand trough immediately followed by a sharp recovery has had lasting consequences for the last 18 months now

Looking at the KS website measurements the waist seems to be generous. The worker pants from SS are a little loose on me in 34. I’m always straddling the line on KS too between 34/36.

what size are you normally? I’m a 40 suit and bought a 40 in navy. Love your fit, this is what I’m targeting!

Thanks! I’m a 40 suit, in that medium-sometimes-I-size-up-to-large space, 5’9”, and wearing a 40 here. I was worried about length but Pete Zottolo is about my height and wears a 42, so I figured going with the suit coat size and embracing the fullness was the way to go.
