Thanks for the replies by the way, don't really have any one to rely on most of the time, since my mother is neck deep in dept and usually doesn't give that great advice.

I'm not sure if you're trolling, in case you're not:

A $1600/month rent means you're living in a more expensive part of the country. that means public transportation is widely available. Live a bit far away, in the cheaper (but safe) part of town, and travel to work, $1600 is insane for a $25K yearly salary, it's not sustainable. Where do you live?

You should learn from the example your mom set and don't dive into a place you can't afford. That's how you GET into debt.

You should look for rooms to rent on craigslist for under $800, that might get you by. Food, internet, clothing, it all adds up very fast. How many coffees did you have this week? This month?

Yeah, Manhattan's estate & housing are just off the chart, while other expenses are not much different from other major metropolises (and even cheaper due to its wide range of options, except housing, and accessibility to them)

Generally all I do is work, sleep and eat. I don't go out much or buy coffee or any other excessive things. Also, the last time I spent money on things other than living expenses was about two months ago, and I only spent about $15.

Either way, craigslist has listed a few cheap apartments/room. Thanks for the help I guess.

I pay $425/month in rent+utilities sharing a 3BR townhome with a couple buddies. It's awesome.

Why the hell would you want to spend your entire salary on rent?

If you make the SF minimum of 250k/yr, after tax you should have about 150k which is about 12k a month to spend. Here's how you should break it down:

1k-Rent
5k-Clothing
1k-Food
3k-Hookers
2k-Blow
whats left-savings

I kind of feel that if you are making 250k per year and you are renting then you are kind of an idiot.

^ really? Some people just don't have the desire or want the hassle of home ownership. If I was a single guy that worked a lot and made that kind of money there is no way I'd want to spend my limited free time dealing with the issues that arise with home ownership. I'd much rather rent a baller apartment downtown or something and let someone else worry about everything.

edit: @ pbooth.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
