I want Black only and I want it to fit slim... I'm assuming most would need to be tailored.

Single breasted would be preferred but they seem harder to find.


Also considering a Cole Haan Military coat, but no idea on how their stuff fits.. I'm a 42R.

There is no such thing as a single breasted peacoat.

Sounds more like you are searching for an overcoat in general. Perhaps a search on 'overcoat' or 'topcoat' would yield some answers.

How is Cole Haan ?

Hit your local Army/Navy store and pick up a real made in USA Navy peacoat for about $100. I bought one about 10 years ago -- very warm and timeless style.

There is a Peacoat thread, which I am shocked that no one has mentioned to this point.

With that said, you seem to be looking for a university style coat as oppose to a peacoat.

If you want to get a peacoat or a university jacket stay away from dept. store designers, and places like Banana Rep. their wool is crap, if it even is wool, and they are not warm.

I would look at the JCrew jacket you mentioned, but I believe it is online only, so you can't go try it on. For a mid price mall store, their standard peacoat is probably the best I have seen so I would assume their university coat is close to the same.

If you are looking for a university coat or something single breasted I would look at Schott NYC. They make pretty solid wool coats and they have many style options at reasonable prices. If a true peacoat is what you want obviously Schott makes them, as does Sterlingwear, who currently supplies the Navy, and Spiewak (who also has a selection similar to Schott). I would stay inside those brands for a reasonable price and style that isn't a crappy Kenneth Cole type jacket.

Also, I would reconsider black. It is a stark and limiting color; unless you have a lot of other jackets in your rotation, charcoal or oxford gray are much more functional colors. For example an oxford gray or charcoal will go with all of the basics: brown, black, blue, charcoal, and it will mix with other brighter colors like orange, light blue, red, green and so on. If you get black it will either not match well to browns and some navys or look to stark against the bright options.

Because you seem new I will give you some tips about SF....People here hate black unless it is used in limited effect such as shoes, ties and belts or for formal wear and funerals. Black coats get a pass if you have something else that is more flexible like a gray to wear with browns and navys.

Gray and charcoal are seen as the most usable canvas to add other colors into, this goes for suits, coats, and other items that encompass the majority of your apparel, this is followed closely or almost equally by navy blue.

Brown shoes go with everything except black suits, but you only wear black suits for funerals (right?), and in that case should be wearing black shoes anyway out of respect and mourning.

Some people here are very, very anal and uptight. Not knowing the difference between a peacoat which is double breasted (DB) and a university coat which is single breasted (SB) is similar to **** or murder in the real world to them....if not worse. Ignore them, read topics for info, product reviews, and use the search function.

Also people here seem to destroy expensive suits and shoes in one wearing, then report they are "******". These people are either Double 0 agents or corporate ninja assassins to do this level of damage to suits and shoes that often reach the $3k-$7k mark after one wearing....They should not be ignored, but either laughed at for wearing their suit to their mission or taken with heavy grain of salt because they are full of it.

I wasn't meaning you specifically, just a general statement about SF overall. I moderate another message board that is very topic specific and I have been at it over there for a long time. I often lose my temper with newbies and people who don't get it as well. I am just trying to give the guy some advice....He has since started another thread about the same topic, which is a classic rookie mistake on any board.
