Caveat...I strongly prefer almost any color brown for casual wear (Jeans , Khakis). It might just be me but Burgundy has more of a formal feel to it that lends itself to versatilty in the work place.

In other words...all browns not created equal. Dark brown very versatile. I don't like Burgundy as much the more casual you get.

For pure versatility, burgundy is arguably superior. For elegance, though, I'll take brown.

Probably I am just lacking in refined sensibility, but I have never been able to discern the great aesthetic superiority of #8 shell cordovan to a quality burgundy calfskin.

I have never been able to comprehend Manton's oft-repeated claim that burgundy calfskin doesn't look "natural." How does it look any more unnatural than any other piece of dyed calfskin--black, brown, chili, chestnut, whatever? The only natural color of leather is "Band-Aid."

I've never seen navy sheep but I have no problem with navy wool.

I know you guys all know this, but the color of a cow's leather has nothing to do with the color of its hair. All leather is dyed to some other color other than what it naturally starts with. Thus, burgundy leather is no less 'unnatural' than chestnut or brown leather.

Horn, on the other hand, often is left in its original color. But then, I don't like blue horn buttons, and many here seem to prefer them with a navy suit.

...and my vote puts burgundy in the lead...

Although I like brown, I prefer burgundy since it can be worn with any color trousers, including black. I have a pair of monkstraps in color #6, slighter more reddish than color #8, that I wear at least once a week. I think they look great with charcoal gray or navy, especially with something above the waist from the red color family.
