Is there even such a thing as an 11-fold tie? There's one on ebay right now.

Doing more than seven folds is possible and done by a number of (mostly italian) makers. However, I myself think of it as a sort of look-at-my-oh-so-many-folds thing. I doubt that the rule more folds=more value applies generally.

Yesterday I saw Isaia 9 fold ties and they are absolutely gorgeous. The silk quality and the finish were impeccable. The salesperson told me it takes one meter of silk to make. I loved the hand and they knot it creates.

^ Just as long as 11 fold has hit the market. I am sure they will get better looking--I hope.

Sounds like he just wanted to make up a number that sounds

. In fact, even ties with fewer folds take up to a meter of silk to make. Quality ties, that is.

Sterling Gillette, You are correct. Up to about 6 folds you will tend to get a better drape due to the increased weight from the silk as opposed to interlining and of course you will get the elegance of a complex folded construction. However, the care put into the construction - which equals slow work with lots of checking small details is what makes the best ties.

My favorite folds don’t have 11 or 7 or anywhere near that many.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the OP. From The Onion, reality copies fiction in absurdity:

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
