Tossing between the followings:

1. Omega Seamaster (James Bond)
2. Rolex Air King
3. IWC Portuguese (second hand)
4. IWC portofino

Which one should i get or if anyone can suggest another on the same price band?

I am looking for a staple watch that might retain its value over time

Thanks

Staple watch? How about Patek Phillipe or AP or Vacheron? Get them used if they are above your price band?

Hmmm... most of these will not retain value over time, unless of course you have access to significant discounts (i.e. through friends and family sales or some inside dealings with distributors).

Of the list, I would go the Rolex. Besides the obvious "classic design" and all roundness of the Rolex, they are very resilient and durable. Furthermore, in terms of "value",you should also have no problem trading your way out of any sticky situation with the Rolex. The wonders of brand recognition. That would be a little harder with an IWC

If you have a little more cash, I'd upgrade to a submariner.

IWC Mark XVI. I absolutely love it. Same movement as the Portofino but a more rugged case, and only a few hundred $$ more. That would be the clear choice for me. Also, I find the Seamaster Aqua Tera much more attractive than the Bond version.

I have a Portuguese 5001 and love it, but really can't stand the Portuguese Chronograph. Unlike the 5001, its movement was not made to fit the case. You can tell by looking at it from the side; it looks like a mushroom. The actual case is significantly smaller in diameter than the bezel and front view suggest. That kind of design compromise would irk me to no end. In your research you'll find that side view photos of the Portuguese Chronograph are extremely rare. I don't think it's a coincidence.

I'm afraid to start learning about watches. I find them interesting, but I know that it would lead to spending, and I'm quite satisfied with the functioning of my inherited Rolex Datejust.

The IWC Portuguese is a pretty cool first choice, and the Air King would be my second choice.
