Would you buy a solid charcoal grey odd jacket?

(I don't remember selling a 3BSB charcoal nailhead jacket, to be honest. A 2BSB, yes I think a couple of times, but 2B I can understand due to the different silhouette. It's the 3BSB unpatterned solid charcoal odd jacket that I struggle with)

It was a Black Label 2B 40R actually (I was going more off the thread title), and the nailhead is very subtle. I like the jacket quite a bit and far prefer to navy for wear with jeans. I can see how a 3B would have more of an orphaned suit jacket vibe. It's not a 3-roll-2 at least?

I could see it with some dove gray pants and maybe changing the buttons to a silver blazer type.

The one I have that's closest to a suiting cloth is a mid-gray twill. But the twill and the MOP buttons make it clear it's not a suit coat. Same things that separate a blazer from a navy suit coat.

I have to agree with Doc; I think it can be done. I'd probably pair the jacket with trousers that were a bit more interesting, say a pinstripe or self-stripe. Probably a warmer colour, like a rich brown. Depending on your complexion and preference, you might consider a tan or other lighter shade of brown. I wouldn't necessarily think "orphaned suit coat."

I also agree. The one I used to own was clearly an odd jacket due to the heavy fabric, but even with a lighter fabric, the buttons would have separated it from an orphaned jacket.

In the case of the ones in this thread: Saint Andrews helpfully indicates on its interior jacket label whether an item is part of a suit or was made just as a jacket. These were labelled "jacket", so weren't orphans.

For Saint Andrews Stuff, "Jacket" doesn't always mean it was only a jacket. They had a line of sport suits that were labeled separately and were like a separates program. The only sure way to know if it is an orphan is on the back of the jacket tag to check if it says "Pants" and usually lists the lining of the pants.

Had a darkish grey flannel, soft weave, natural shoulder jacket made a few years ago with ticket pocket, double vent and pair it with an array of paterned trousers in black/grey, grey/ blue and some solids: black and light grey.
With that grey jacket or my black one, or a light grey I have , I don't duplicate for several weeks or more if I were to wear just those three jackets and pants.
I think the grey jacket, much like a navy or black is a good work horse.

Blue or navy blue pants, can work. For buying one, I don't think so... Got two tweeds - but they are not purely dark gray. One is a Zegna interpretation of donnegal - grey herringbone with lots of colored "bumps", other one is a cashmere cotton with a barely visible brown window pane (kind of hopsack) - intended for summer, is perfect for spring/autumn.

A solid gray odd jacket with solid blue odd trousers is like my own personal version of aesthetic distopia. YMMV.

+1. This is what they would wear in bizarro land. Also, it just does not look look good.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
