I stopped by a unique store recently, RUEHL No. 925. Only later did I realize it was the higher-priced line by Abercrombie & Fitch, targeting twentysomethings and early thirtysomethings. The clothes are similar in quality to J. Crew but a causal, distressed look rather than classic look. The milieu is very 1960s-1970s Greenwich Village, New York, characterized by a reader during the heyday of Village Voice weekly.

How did you not realize their a spin-off of Abercrombie when their clothes look exactly the same + $10?

Your observations are exactly why I've never been compelled to step into one.

Yeah I had read that Ruehl was A&F's attempt at targeting thirty-somethings, so I was curious. Then I walked into one, and every item looked exactly like A&F. I was completely dumbfounded.

Did you happen to go to the Bleeker St. store?

The overwhelming smell of the cologne they saturate the store with is enough to repel me.

When the line first came out, I thought that Abercrombie finally came out with something different.

Fast forward a couple years, they started putting logos on EVERYTHING, and putting it right in line with the other AF brands. I was honestly scared when I was in the San Diego location. The store looked so nice on the outside but once I was in, it was pitch black, there were really furry rugs that you could trip over, stairs and rails in random places, mirrors sitting on the floor, I had a hard time trying to escape. In a way, it would be easy to steal something since nobody would see or hear, but it would be hard because you'd have to find your way out without tripping over some random railing or step.

I'm afraid it's an overpriced AF just as everybody else thinks. Oh, not to mention the service. The registers are like, at a bar with barstools. I thought it was cool. But then I was actually glad the barstools were there. I was in line after 5 people for like, 15 or 20 minutes (mind you, there was more than one open register) and once I got there, I had ONE tee shirt that I was buying for a friend. The man was so slow, and I also had to wait for him to put it in a box. Long story (really long) short, I was glad to finally get out of that yuppie skinny ***** filled store.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
