How to Spend a Gift Certificate?

I received a $250 gift certificate for a local high-end menswear store. I'm debating about how to spend it: put $250 towards a high-priced item like a jacket or good shoes, or buy something small and frivolous, like one or two neckties... How would you spend it?

It all depends what articles of clothing the stores carries and what your needs are. $250 is not exactly chump change.

What do you need? Just go to the store and look around. See what they have. If you see something really nice that you would not normally buy use this as a reason to do it. If you don't love any of the big ticket items, get the ties or stock up on socks and underwear. Also, don't feel you have to use it right away if you don't see exactly what you want. It will be just as good a few months from now.

The correct answer is always shoes. Use the GC toward a nice pair of shoes and you'll not regret it. You can always buy ties or other crap later but if you wouldn't spend $500 on shoes otherwise, this is the time. Be careful though, once you get a taste for nice shoes, there is no going back.

I would add $$ and buy something that I love. Do you have the $$ (and desire) to add?

This is very good advice. Just don't buy something you really don't like or doesn't feel perfect just because you have $250 of it free.

Also, a lot of times the small items, accessaries in these "high-end menswear store" are ridiculously marked up.

+1 on getting shoes. Just make sure they are classically styled.

Ties and accessories are easy to find on markdown elsewhere.

Well, just got back from the store, and despite a big end-of-season sale, came home empty handed. There were some okay Cole Haan & AE shoes, but nothing that I liked enough that I would have paid full price for them had they not been on sale. I think I'll save the gift certificate for the fall and put it towards a splurge on something I really like. Thanks for the input.

best advice I've seen so far-- a good investment that will last you a long time, and look good from day 1 through day 1001.......and more.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
