zimmerli is incredibly soft but durable mercerized cotton
it washes well and won't fall apart
if it's white, wash it in hot
if it's black, wash it in cold
dry on low or drip dry
no need to take it to the dry cleaners

a less expensive but just as good alternative is schiesser
finding them to be much more comfortable and durable than zimmerli product

Alex, I'm considering giving Zimmerli a shot and I'm wondering if you prefer the Royal Classic or Pure comfort. My shirts these days are all bespoke with quite a high armhole and they fit quite close to the body (38" chest, shirt measures 40.5"), so it's essential that my undershirts do so as well. They really do need to be a second skin so they don't show under the shirts, but I don't want to feel like I'm wearing a corset either.

Royal Classic and Pure Comfort are totally different constructions.

Royal Classic is one of the two most widely known and traditional Zimmerli lines. Having been made now for a century or so, R.C. is cut with the fit of a traditional undershirt. It has the stretch ability of a traditional undershirt knit - a bit here; a bit there - but not a great deal of 'recovery' ability until laundered. It is extremely thin and virtually transparent. At E-32 gauge (32 needles per inch) it is one of the world's finest pure cotton knits. It is the most popular of the Zimmerli lines and the one with the most available models (6 shirts, 7 briefs, and 5 boxers as well as 3/4 and full length long underwear).

That said, you probably don't want it. Pure Comfort is one of two Zimmerli "Second Skin" constructions. Zimmerli has been working for four years now to develop and refine the knitting machine which is capable of making this, the world's finest knit. As of late 2005, they had successfully woven an E-44 gauge at 89% cotton/11%Lycra and the first few months of Pure Comfort were made in this gauge. After a bit of runtime, they were able to bring the machine up as high as 50 needles (E-50 gauge). At this fineness, Dimension 50Â

, there is no fabric anywhere which even comes close. Pure Comfort is the smoothest knit you will ever feel. Its stretch-recovery is remarkable at a virtual 100%. And with the advent of the Dimension 50Â

, Zimmerli has even managed to successfully weave at 92% cotton/8% Lycra! Pure Comfort is the one which meets your needs.

Specifically for you, I would advise a medium. It will not feel at all like a corset but will completely conform to your body. In contrast to Zimmerli's traditional white and black, Pure Comfort is also available is a beautiful blue.

Care: We advise drying Pure Comfort in the dryer on the "no heat" setting to relax the fabric. Otherwise, due to the extreme fineness of the fabric, twisting of the knit inherent in machine washing will not be undone
What if I don't have a no-heat option? Is it a big deal to just let them air-dry or were you just nitpicking there?

Only for the Pure Comfort: Once they have air-dried, give them 5 minutes in the dryer on low heat if you notice any twisting in the shirt. If not, air-dry is fine. Note: I air-dry and have not noticed any twisting. I'm just passing on a comment from the production department.

You really can't just run these throught the washer/dryer? I'm sorry, but I already have way too many garments that require me to hand launder them. Since I'm lacking in this butler department, this is a major pain and I surely couldn't justify doing it for underwear. I guess I'll have to stick with Nordstrom boxers and v-necks for now.

You can run them through the washer just fine, and the dryer is just fine so long as it has an air-dry (no heat) feature. However, high-heat drying is the death of fine cotton, whether it's in dress shirts or Zimmerli underwear. If you dry Zimmerli with high heat, it won't last as long, and it won't feel as nice while it does last.

I do as Alex has mentioned,
wash,
air dry
pop them in the dryer for just a few minutes.
The are softer and fit better after a few minutes in the dryer.

I have done my laudry in thisway for years with many items, it is, in my findings,
to be one of the best ways to care for your goods.
