thanks, greg.

i've been looking for some pima polos for weekend wear and found land's end has a very wide selection and at the $30 level, i might try out a couple to see if they're good.

J Crew's polos are $25 if you buy in pairs. If you want something fitted, they are by far preferable to Land's End.

I like J Crew, and Lands End.

Lands End stuff is usually cut way big, especially shirts and sweaters. J Crew is generously cut, but not as blousy as Lands End. Lands End recently launched a "tailored fit" line which is fairly fitted -- slimmer than the standard J Crew stuff.

I will also add that although J Crew usually has more funky colors than Lands End, Lands End occassionally does create some crazy colors as well. They had a bunch of moleskin trousers last season that were red, purple, green, etc. I bought the brown ones and am happy with them.

One warning about Lands End: they have a navy blue they call "true navy", but it is actually really light in real life (more like electric blue). Quite terrible.

Their custom shirt program rocks.

JCrew is still a great option for casual wear- it's my go-to shop for those kinds of things (khakis, tshirts, simple polos, sweaters, etc). I as well mourn the days when they put EVERYTHING on amazing clearance but they've gotten so much better in most every aspect that I can't complain. Of the bunch that they are lumped into (A&F, BR, Land's End, Gap, etc.) they are by far the best option for the sartiorally inclined, IMO

I find I have to size waaaaay down for Lands' End polos, but I really do like them otherwise.

LE's real navy blue color is "midnight navy", I believe. I picked up a duffel coat in this color, and it's just about right.

I love Jcrew. I used to think they were a poor man's Polo but after I bought a few shirts from them I loved their fit and the quality. FOr a $60 shirt I they're great, Im sure others would disagree. Some of theyre items are not worth their cost new (their suits at around $500, when even I could buy something a little better for the same price at an outlet).

Anyway I hope on buying a pair of suede mocassins ($70), white linen blazer ($120) and pants ($50) from them during their current sale

Lands' end custom shirt program is ok (I did a white shirt through the program). I would prefer more options, though. Personally, I would want taller collars, and edge stitching on the collars.

As for J Crew - nice looking stuff, but a lot of the shirts don't fit me.

Figure to revive a necrothread than start a new one.

In general, how is Wallace & Barnes/J. Crew? I seem to see much of them in stores recently.

Also for those in NYC, there is a sample sale. Do they typically have stuff like Barbour make it there? I doubt Alden stuff would last long if there were...

J Crew is ok. They do the preppy thing pretty well. Someone mentioned Lands End and they usually get my money over J Crew. I like the stodgy old man look of their clothes and the quality is solid. One thing J Crew has over LE though, madras. I love me some J Crew madras.

They do like thick, better quality than JCrew stuff. But they're also...slightly pricier? I mean they're basically pieces you buy if you're casually shopping perhaps. If they're on discount, not bad idea at all.

Only thing i bought at JCrew so far is a... madras BD ss shirt. Very nice colour, good cut, the collar could be bigger and have a button at the back, but i bought it at 50 Per cent off during the sales... So good value. Otherwise i find them pretty expensive for what they are (a High street shop) too.

W&B is their expensive collection, some nice items - among them nice takes on military classics - they did last summer a Cotton 3b jacket very Trad i really liked, but none in my size unfortunately.

I always go J. Crew but never picked anything up. It’s definitely BR with trad character. I do like their collaborations (Barbour, Alden, Penfield, etc.) but they never seem to last long enough to make on sale.

I revived the thread because now of a current sample sale. The suiting seems okay mass produced stuff (Ludlow suits seem popular). Thanks for the H&B feedback. That’s good to know should I swing by the sale as I see it a lot in the shops so I assume they’re be some at the sale.

I’ll let you know if I end up with anything!

J. Crew helped me develop a style, and I still love the look of their stock, but I've since gone elsewhere (Proper Cloth) for shirts that fit better—since I'm not 6' and skinny—and I'm losing interest in the scrawny Ludlow suits that once made my heart skip a beat (enter SuitSupply).

I still love J. Crew (and J. Crew Factory) for pants, sweaters, and accessories. As I type I'm lounging in some gorgeous pyjama pants I picked up on sale there.

Interesting post. J Crew is in big financial difficulties and one suggestion why is that it has saturated its position as a ‘gateway’ entry into more classic menswear. Young lads start out with some Ludlow kit (really not bad but overpriced and not very adventurous colours) and from there either stick with their one interview/wedding/funeral suit (Jared Kushner?) or else get more involved with menswear and step up to the higher quality of Suitsupply and endless possibilities beyond.
