Wool gabardine topcoats

I just picked up a rather old one made for Louis, Boston in black with a ghillie collar that almost rolls open to a notch lapel. I haven't seen one new for a very long time. It seems like a nice compromise between raincoat and topcoat. Any thoughts on these?

I have one in navy by Oxxford which replaced one from H-F which was stolen from the cloakroom of a prestigious gentlemen's club in London.

How do these do against the rain? Gabardine suits are better than spongy flannel, but still not as good as a raincoat.

I like wool gabardine topcoats. I had this one but never wore it so I gave it to an SF member:

That's almost the same as the one I bought:

It's marked "The blue blood of weatherproofs" so I presume its water resistance is at least reasonable.
