Why the sudden proliferation of stretch fabrics?

Hi folks. I have a quick question. Over the past two years, I've noticed that larger brands like J. Crew have started incorporated more stretch fabrics into their khakis and jeans. Do you know why? Is this a fad, or were there recently improvements in the available fabrics that enabled this? Thanks!

I suspect it has to do with the trend towards a tighter fit. Tight clothing that does not stretch is very uncomfortable.

A few percent of stretch fabric, such as Elastine, has been common in trim fitted jeans and trousers in Europe for years. Premium fabric mills such as Zegna have been offering more options. About two years ago I selected a Zegna corduroy for a custom suit. It turned out to be an excellent choice as the "give" in the jacket makes it very comfortable, even for wearing it on 6-hour flights and while driving.

I guess it depends on the % of stretch material.
I've been wearing the same cut of jeans for several years.
The most recent pair I bought were "stretch" in the same size
34. They keep falling down. I called the manufacturer, 7 For All
Mankind, about this . The rep said we recommend going down a size
for the models with "stretch". Needless to say, no one told me.
Incidentally, virtually all of their denim is stretch now.

I've also seen it being used in suiting, jackets, and shirting over the past few years. Mainly by the Italian makers.
