Bought a Macbook and it died 13 months later. Go straight to no warranty hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Even though I own a handful of Apple products, and dealt with Apple from a manufacturer of Apple accessories aspect, I'm falling out of favor of the company. There's been a decline in the quality of the products and Apple is making moves to milk more money out of everyone.

I've had my iMac for 2yrs now w/no problems. The only reason why I have a PC is that a mortgage program I use Calyx Point doesn't run on Mac & neither does Encompass from what I remember. But then again now that you can run Windows on Mac my next thing to do is get rid of the desktop iMac & go to a Macbook Pro & just run that one program on Windows.

Use whatever gets your job done faster/more efficiently.

No OS is perfect, they all suck in different ways.

My GF and I both have macbooks. She has had hers for a year longer than I and it is really slow. What is the mac equivalent of defraging and disk cleaning? Just want to speed it up some.

If I had to choose I would want form and function. That is the strength of Apple.

I work for a major hardware corporation providing components with Apple, and I can tell you that Apple is NOT what you claim to be. First of all, they not the quickest at adapting new technologies (SSD, dual core etc...), they just broadcast these 'new' features louder then other companies. Their screens are also ghastly from an engineering perspective, I can't give you any specific details, but it has to do with how Apple calibrate and 'liven' the colors on their screens.

Also, Apple is not green. If I recall correctly, the '05 version of the iPod had lead in it. And the new "Chromatic" iPods are supposed to be the greenest ever, which goes to show you that they didn't care a priori.

The software for the Apple is no different than the ones offered for Windows. In most cases, they can both arrive with the exact same result, but they take different approaches. OSX software is more intuitive at the cost of user control; while Windows software has a slight learning curve with the benefit of precise management (Linux has an even steeper learning curve, with the ultimate control). Which one you like depends totally on your commitment for learning the software.

The MagSafe cord is a nice touch. But is it worth the premium?

This isn't really that relevant to anything i.e. I wouldn't use it to sway anyone from Mac to PC but check out some of these custom desktops you can do on a PC (with additional software and probably more configuration than I care to do): http://lifehacker.com/5104423/most-p...sktops-of-2008

I got a PC because I need to get real work done on it.

If it was just to play, probably a mac could fit the bill.

Yes there is a Windows and Linux version, but is there a Mac GIMP?

There is an officially supported X11 version, and there is a limited-feature but decent port in Seashore. I think I heard of another beta version that was similarly lacking in full gimpitude, but other than that, I don't know of a native OSX full-featured GIMP.

You can't use IKEA kitchen planning software on a Mac.
