Why do you get upset when someone doesn't like the same foods you like?

I noticed in the ethnic food thread that a lot of people seem to get really worked up about people not liking certain things. I'm not sure why people get so upset about it. People like different things. If everyone had the same tastes, all food would be the same and there would be no variety. It is a good thing that some folks dislike various things and like other things.

So someone says they don't like ______ food. . . why does that upset you so much?

Well I can speak for myself when i say that I don't get upset when people don't like the food that I like, however, in reference to that thread, the language I used with reference to mexican and chinese food was rather definitive and harsh. Obviously if you like that style of food and someone derides it so strongly you might get a little pissed. I think some people have a little too much pride in the food they like, but you also have to remember that I take food froma different angle than most people, since I am a chef and have worked a great deal in really great restaurants. For me food is incredibly important and even vs the average well traveled foodie, my opinions and demands are far more exacting.

Food and culture is so intertwined saying you don't like someones food sometimes get misconstrued into prejudice. I was once called racist by a white lady for saying I couldn't offer an opinion of jalapeno and cheese pretzels from Barnes and Noble :/, because I said I didn't like Mexican inspired food.

In my case, my first response to SField's post was just a simple disagreement. I disagreed and posted some food photos. It snowballed from there. :p

The only time it pisses me off is if we want to go for Indian / Korean / whatever, and one dumbass whines about not liking that particular kind of food.

This forum (and the internet in general) is full of people who like to think that they have some kind of high class taste (mmm, I love sheep blood and bull's balls) and are therefore better than people who don't enjoy the same kinds of things.

+1. i can't date vegetarians or girls that don't like sushi, either. i don't care if you'll "go there with me" either. part of going out to dinner is sharing the entire experience.

Because I am never wrong and if I have entered into conversation with you, I feel that you are worthy of my time and acknowledgment. However, when you say you disagree with my tastes (which are godly might I add) your entire existence disappoints me.

My soulmate!

As long as you don't disagree with me the universe shouldn't implode.

I went out with a girl the other night (FRIEND as I'm about to get married) and she immediately made me wish I hadn't taken her out to dinner. She went on and on about how much I could reduce my carbon footprint if I cut down on my meat intake (I had some sort of mexican chicken soup as an appetizer that was incredible and a filet and lobster for the main (I'm bulking). I told her that I drive a land rover that gets 16 miles per gallon and she about died

I'm generally okay with their preferences if they tried it before, but if they condemn it without even a taste, they're just idiots in my book.
