Why do americans never say 'goodbye' when hanging up the phone?

it depends on who im talking to but its not uncommon to not say bye. there are several people i talk with several times a day, either work or social, and when the convo is over, you hang up. no need to waste breath. its not anyone trying to be "dominant", "badass", or whatever, it just happens naturally.

again, this is completely dependent on the relationship

I notice this all the time on TV, but for the most part, some form of good bye is said in real life.

I just sort of trail off in mid-sentence and hang up.

One of the great things about cell phones is the convenient exits they allow even on occasions when it might otherwise not be okay to hang up. Mangle your speech a bit, or trail off, and the other party assumes your connection has gone bad. Or simply stop responding altogether, and they'll again curse at the connection and hang up.

That's true. I've done that several times, and nobody's the wiser. Of course, there's always

That's only movies. I assure you, we think it's as weird as you do. I'm not sure where conventions like that come from, but I'm even more baffled by why people think they have to use them. People in movies don't say hello when they answer the phone, either! They just pick up the phone, and the person on the other end intuits that the person they're calling has picked up, and starts talking! In particularly hacky movies, people picking up the phone will say, "Talk to me." Goofy, goofy, goofy.

Actually, when someone says "thank you" to me, I usually tell them to suck it.
