Why all the hate for wholecuts?

I can't compete with those who have higher end wholecuts. I have a pair of Herring Chaucer lls -from before Herring had trouble with supply of these shoes. They are a beautiful, deep burgundy and are probably the most comfortable shoes I have. They don't crease too much across the vamp and polish up to a deep sheen. I am happy to wear them with casual clothes as these are pretty much the only type of clothes that I wear, these days.

My black Weston wholecut Chelsea's are easily the most versatile footwear item I own. I have worn them with a tux, a suit, and jeans with a t shirt. I think they look better with a tux than cap toe oxfords which is what most people end up wearing. In fact short of real tuxedo shoes or pumps I think a sleek wholecut is better than anything else.

Sorry @Caustic Man, not a huge fan of wholecuts and plaintoes

As others have said, I find them very formal. They don't work well with casual fits

They are also very boring. I prefer a captoe or broguing of some kind to break up the visual monotony.

I would consider the C&J Alex for a formal shoe, but a captoe can easily fill its role

Some people probably think that wholecuts that are black, high-shine, and unadorned (no brogueing, etc. ) look feminine.

Also, some men dislike them because they can make feet look huge. That's similar to what someone said about emphasizing an unattractive last shape.

Anyone that can see a wholecut (the kind we're talking about) in that shoe can see a hat in a pair of derbies

Whole cuts are just weird.

I cant put my finger on it but to my eyes they simply look wrong, like somethings missing. They remind me of a photo from ages ago in the paper of a very pretty young girl and at first glance it was just a pretty girl in a sweet little outfit but something was "wrong". After more than a glance its evident the girl doesnt have a nose. Was simply born without one and doesnt have any scaring or malformation just flat skin where the nose should be.

The picture went round the office for a little while and everyone did a double take and didnt initially spot the "problem" but knew something was wrong. Wholecut shoes are the same to me.

This is similar to my take.

To me the lack of any details except the lacing is reminiscent of a flat expanse of skin with a surgical scar. It is just slightly creepy looking.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... that's what medallions are for - to distract from the 'scar'. A wholecut with a medallion makes it more interesting and gives any pair of interested eyes a focal point to look at.
