Well, I meant putting it down just so, and looking sophisticated. Ask RDiaz: the uniform where he lives is a fine v-neck (optionally cashmere) sweater, BD shirts (probably stripes) over slacks (probably lovat colored).

I used to see more sweaters a few years back. People in the office seem to be losing their fear of tailored clothing now, although odd jacket + trouser pairings are always terrible. It could be that those sweater people are so common that I don't notice them, though. Might try to pay attention tomorrow

The textures! Enough said.

Thanks, Fred!

Just wanted to note, despite the slubby look, the shirt is not a blend, its 100% cotton. Its like a raw cotton or something, not exactly sure the technical name, but I like it.

Anyone has an opinion on this (sweaters+shirt colour), it sorta didn't sound like a question so you might have missed it.

I wear sweaters all the time, and I almost always wear them with a BD collar, like you. But I don't limit myself to white shirts. It just depends on the color or the sweater, but I'll wear a colorful patterned shirt with a neutral or or sedate solid sweater. I've even been known to mix patterns if it feels right.

Sweaters are a category more interesting in theory than in practice. In theory, they're a great, semi-leisurely way to appear "smart" in a casual setting, in the European sense of the word. In practice, they're used by dullards in business casual settings in lieu of jackets, or by awkward slobs on first dates. Most Americans who wear them don't seem to know how to wear them, or what kind to wear, and when.

And so the sweater beguiles and bedevils people. Few things look cooler than a well-fitted sweater, on a confident wearer, in the right context. Few things look worse than an ill-fitting sweater, or douchier than a context-inappropriate sweater.

Unfortunately, people who work in offices can only think in three modes: business, business casual, and pyjamas. Therein these associations of sweaters as "lesser than." If your job description is significantly more plastic or, heaven forfend, you are a creature of pure leisure, the sweater has no such pejorative connotations.

On the other hand, I think everyone can agree that shetland crewnecks are easy to get right. They come alive in their bagginess.

Shirt and tie are businessy, thus require a suit. Square looks -on my monitor -too red to work with anything really. Jacket, pants and shoes are nice though.

Can't say that I'm a fan of that jacket. The lapels and houndstooth pattern instantly date it, making it look like a vintage jacket from the '70s -- even if it may be brand new.

To the extent that "good taste" involves a "timeless" style, or an approximation thereof, I'd say that your jacket seems too of-a-moment.

The shirt is oxford cotton. I was under the impression that that is a casual shirt. The tie, yeah I can see what you mean. I thought I could get away with a solid navy tie because it is a rough weave but maybe not.

I magnified the pic, and I see what you mean about the shirt fabric. However, it seems to be a royal oxford (as opposed to "normal", more casual oxford fabric), which is still it less than optimal for this kind of getup.
