I have a black silk knit that I wear often with a gray double breasted suit and white shirt, I think it looks great. Never thought about wearing it with a navy suit.

I never thought about wearing it with navy either, but I have been hearing a black tie with a navy suit is acceptable. Maybe regular silk, and not knitted.

Nothing wrong with a black grenadine or knit tie at the office. I wear it more with a grey than a navy suit but it can certainly look fine.

I am hardly the arbiter of good taste, but I do work in a very, very conservative business dress environment and a knit tie would be mocked relentlessly.

It can look good, but you need to make sure there is enough contrast coming from the shirt. Classic is with a white shirt, but doesn't need to be.

Are you in the US?

There is a guy who works at my company who wears knits exclusively. He always looks great, but it does stand out.

Its one of Manton's rules.

I wear white dress shirts with sportcoats in the summer, I like the crisp, clean look that it lends to lighter colored sportcoats where I don't think a blue shirt works. Also, with a khaki odd jacket/ suit, I prefer white to blue. There is also nothing wrong with a navy sportcoat/white shirt.
