I have a black silk knit that I wear often with a gray double breasted suit and white shirt, I think it looks great. Never thought about wearing it with a navy suit.
Even white oxford button down? I've decided that I kind of like that with an odd jacket.
I am hardly the arbiter of good taste, but I do work in a very, very conservative business dress environment and a knit tie would be mocked relentlessly.
I think the only way a white shirt is acceptable with an odd jacket is if it is an OCBD.
