I’m a 57, and did get a Stetson in my size, but otherwise, yeah, all too big. Grabbed a 59 Biltmore too (easy to size down), but passed on the Lock, tempting as it was at that price. (A trilby doesn’t seem to suit my face anyway.) There was a bin full of straw hats that were good and cheap but looked pretty beat up. You’d have to spend some time ironing and steaming.
You probably know this, but at JJ if you ask they’ll show the room in the back where they make and repair their hats. Last time I was there, a few months ago, there were a whole bunch of overstock hats back there, including some nice Panamas, all half price. They included a Mayser I’d given up
on finding.
Do you mean the milliner's (the incomparable Van Huynh) work space? I must go in there way too much because I just walk right in there when I drop in to JJ lol I actually bring my vintage hats in there quite often for new sweatbands or new ribbons, or just a steaming and cleaning and that's usually where you place the repair order and pick up so that's mainly why I'm back there. I have seen his work up close and he is a true artisan. He has made some wild stuff for Andre 3000 and Cam Newton, but I've also seen his take on 1930s fedoras (high crown, short brim, wide ribbon, thick bow) and it is exquisite. Jeff Goldblum was just in there the other day getting a cap repaired. Van, as they say, is the man!
