Ripley on Netfilix was spectacular.

White Lotus is the perfect template for a miniseries, in my opinion. Low/no stakes. Minimal plot needed. Even less character development (the broadest of broad strokes suffice) required.

And, it's super enjoyable! THIS should be the north star for miniseries templates. Give shows that require some depth (looking at you, True Detective) enough run time to tell the story.

As an aside, I dig her, but Aubrey Plaza is the white gal equivalent of Michael B. Jordan. Neither can act a lick, but they're pretty as heck.

I'm not an expert on the profession, but I've always considered Jordan to be a pretty good actor, going all the way back to his days on The Wire.

One episode left in Shogun…
In episode 9, Mariko, definitely the main character (and that’s what makes the difference with the previous version) thanks to her back story, has been killed by an explosion in a shinobi (ninja) attack. I wondered if there be would be a ninja attack, that was one of the best scene of the first adaptation in 1980. 🥷🏻

I'm watching the 1980s Shogun on Internet Archive and I think it is so much better than the current series - it so much better captures the themes of the book.

I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention here. It was great. I rewatched the Minghella (Damon/Law) movie this week and just finished rereading the novel. "Ripley" is a much more accurate portrayal of the book than the movie. The cinematography is first rate. Think noir de noir.

Agreed, it was extremely well done. Almost all compositions could've been a beautiful photograph, taking good advantage of the high contrast black & white. Also great cast in all the smaller parts, perfectly directed. And after... a certain turn of events it becomes suitably nightmarish. Good stuff.
