What to do about a 10" drop?

Good news; some serious weight lifting and a disciplined diet has recently moved me to a 42" jacket size and a 32" waist. Bad news; buying off the rack is now problematic. When I go bespoke, of course, that's not a problem, but alas, I can't go bespoke all the time. And continued weight lifting is likely to increase that 10" drop to 12" before the year is out.

The issue came up yesterday when trying on a Ralph Lauren Black Label suit (my preferred off the wrack rig). The pants were simply clownish on me. Now, my tailor (the sainted Will Field, hallowed be his name) has proven himself capable of altering pants like that, but still, the extra fabric around the legs can't be altered much and I look like some border-line MC Hammer.

Happily, the store agreed to switch-out trousers from a 40" to accommodate me, but I fear that discount buying via eBay and whatnot is now over.

Do any of you guys have this problem? If so, how do you handle it?

Yes it can. Tailoring costs start to add up, but the legs can easily be slimmed and/or tapered. That's actually far less complicated than recutting the top part.

wait till you hit drop 11. I am 37 inch chest vs 26 inch waist. and 5'10". I just buy 36 R and my tailor does the wonder. Last time I had to trim a 32" pants down to 27" , plus taper all the way through and 2" cuff. Got mates rate of $100( $25 to tapper , $25 for 2" cuff , $25 for taken in at mid waist band and $45 for taking in from either side). Waist was taken in via split waist band and to balance also taken in form either sides. It is bloody expensive.

I have a 10" drop (42/32) and RL black label works great for me. How big are your thighs?

Oh, quite possible. During my lean phase, when I was deliberately eating frugally and running ****** off, I got my waist down to 29" at 6'3".

I am just skinny. No exercise , no diet. Always between 54 to 55 kg. quite hard to buy business wear. And need quite a bit of alterations.

Get MTM to fix your issue or MTO

MTM has been the only thing that works for me. I'm a serious lifter/bodybuilder as well, and I'm 5'7" with a 42/31 drop. Nothing off the wrack has been tailorable for me, and suit separates are usually junky brands/fabrics.

Within reason. I've got a pair of 38" trousers from Brooks Brothers that has been trimmed to the max and they are still nearly unwearable on that front.

Was lifting with only so-so efficiency from 12/12-12/13 but - thanks to a really good personal trainer - I really went into high gear last December. Best thing I've ever done. Well worth the massive alteration costs associated with it.

5'11" on my end.

If the pant is truly recut and not merely altered to be smaller, anything smaller is within reason.
