Hello,

If there already is a thread on this subject I would appreciate a forward. Seems like a ton of knowledge in here regarding suits, who makes what and where.

I have a few nice suits that I've bought over the years. I believe that two of my suits are full canvas. One a navy Canali, the other a Charcoal Zegna. I also have a Hugo Boss which was a gift. I realize this is fused suit as are couple other off the rack nordstrom label suits I've purchased. The boss fits nicely and the fabric is great but just doesn't have the same feel as the canali and zegna. Before I go out and buy another suit I figured I should find out what off the rack suits are full canvas and what are fused.

Thanks for the time.

one way is to test it out yourself. there's test you can do to determine if it's fully canvassed or not. it basically entails pulling apart the lining and outside layer and feeling for a floating (or middle) layer/canvas. If there is none, it's fused. Search this forum and B&S and you should come up with a multitude of threads talking about brands.

This is an extremely complicated question, considering the sheer number of makers and the number of different lines those makers offer. Ralph Lauren alone could fill a book. Try searching for the specific makers you're interested in -- that should bring up plenty of information. Better, check the suits yourself. Gently pull apart the layers of cloth below the coat's bottom buttonhole. If you can feel a third layer inside, the coat is fully canvassed.

There are also some makers that do have the layer inside, but the fronts are still fused.

The pinch test, should also verify that the cloth at the fronts has the same thickness as the cloth as the sleeves.
