The Robber - German/Austrian film - great, great, great

Drive was below average, don't know what the buzz is for

Watched Pete Smalls is Dead - a bit over the top, entertaining enough, worth a watch

Watched Margin Call, pretty good...

Meek's Cutoff - not for everyone, but I loved it. An excellent meditation on the struggle to settle out west.

The Tree of Life has got to be the best film this year, **** that film is still looming over me and I watched it a few months ago.

Serious question for you or anyone who thoroughly enjoyed this film: what did I miss? I mean, I thought it was a terrible film on so many levels, and any time I discuss it with someone who enjoyed it they either respond by saying I just don't get it, or that it's one of those films that you either love or hate. I personally thought it was overwhelming and while ambitious, Malick appears to have taken too big of a bite to chew. I found it to be overly preachy, but my main issue with this film is that there doesn't appear to be a collective experience, and instead the film unnecessarily isolates the viewer, but that's probably more of an ideological critique. I mean I found myself holding back laughter during those "epic" scenes.

I find it interesting to hear about people's positive experiences with the film and how they contrast with my experience.

Just came back from watching Tintin with my son. I read a ton of Tintin growing up, and my son does that now, so we had a good time because of that. he loved it; I thought it was okay, but I think it's the start of another Spielberg series.

Going to see TTSS on and waiting for my gf to come back to watch Sherlock (not that I can't watch it without her, but she wants us to watch it together :smarmy:

haha... I almost fell into this abyss the other night except it was my father who wanted to watch it...he loves low-grade ****** sci-fi... I refused knowing it would suck. Thanks for validating my stubborness! But we had to compromise so I watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes w/ him, which, b/c it did NOT have Mark Wahlberg I actually found ok.
now has anyone seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy yet? That looks like it could be great.

Want to see, but I have a feeling that I will wait until BD for this.

The wife and I went to see J Edgar. It was okay, but not spectacularly interesting. Good character study. Leo is very good. The makeup is amazing.

I think this would be an interesting view. Leo has become quite a respectable actor... good indeed.

Serious question for you or anyone who thoroughly enjoyed this film: what did I miss?

Your right—it is an overwhelming film (sublime natural imagery, CGI, unusual jump-cut editing, etc.), but I think it's done purposefully. Here he a quote for the The Thin Red Line at GreenCine Daily which I think could equally apply to The Tree of Life:
Quote:
I think this provides a good starting point for approaching this film. It's hard not too get too intellectual about it. I'm unsure of the religious references, or what the ending was really about, but in the end, I found its ability to sweep me away emotionally its main strength. Maybe I gravitate towards it because I've had issues with my own parents recently.

I'm not sure what you mean by "collective experience" and "isolating the viewer". Can you further elaborate? Are you referring to the experience of movie-going in general? I thought the "epic" scenes were done tastefully—I'm not sure what was corny about them though it's not the first time I've heard that criticism, often likening it to the National Geographic Channel.

Just watched The Invention of Lying. It was cute and was funny in moments, but a little thick on the whole atheist schtick.

******* great year for films. cant remember wanting to see this many movies

Totally agree. Shame, The Descendants, The Artist, Martha Marcy May Marlene, My Week With Marilyn, and J Edgar all come out here over the next few months. It seems the release dates here are getting closer to the US which is good. I still haven't seen Melancholia, Drive, or We Need to Talk About Kevin, all of which are still playing here but are due for DVD release overseas soon. Now, if only I had money.

One of the greatest movies ever made is Groundhog Day. It is funny and immensely deep. I have seen it over and over. :)

For some unknown reason it also apparently ruined Bill Murray's relationship with Harold Ramis.

Leo has been a fine actor for a long time. Check out What's Eating Gilbert Grape and This Boy's Life.
