I think it's mostly just Tolkien. On TV, I thought The Witcher was decent, I really liked Sandman, Dead Boys Detectives, Shadow & Bone, Lockwood & Co., Arcane, and Legend of Vox Machina, right off the top of my head. Over the past couple of years, I've read approximately 30 fantasy books across a couple of subgenres. Now that I'm writing all this, I'm realizing that none of what I've enjoyed recently is classic high fantasy swords and sorcery stuff. I dunno if that's maturation, or just changing taste. 🤷♂️Is this a case of you not enjoying any kind of fantasy as much as you used to? In which case you might be suffering from some kind of maturation or 'growing up', which is best to be avoided.
If it's just Tolkien's stuff you are starting to find boring, well that's because it kinda is (well, not The Hobbit novel, that will always be one of the greatest books ever written). Go get some nice juicy Sword & Sorcery from Howard, Leiber, CL Moore or Moorcock instead. Especially Howard.
