Not surprised. I can understand not offering a cume deals. It's not really a big deal and little things like that are going to be different state to state.

NY doesn't offer cumes. NJ has a discounting system called rips. The account receives a check at the end of each month. MA has a lot of weird allowances that most states don't.

Back to the drinking...JK Scrumpy's Orchard Gate Gold Cider. My wife hates wine, and I can't finish a bottle in one night and going gluten free has eliminated most beers (Omission is pretty damn good though, and they've just released an IPA) so its cider and whisk(e)y for me...I enjoy drinking with her...I'm a dork.

Just open up a magnum of Petrus for the sangria.
This reminds me of a story. When I was a young and innocent man we had two French exchange students as guests who were great snobs. So I and a friend invited them to dinner, ordered a decent red wine, some soda water and Almdudler. After the wine was poured I said: and now let's mix it! And we poured herb lemonde respective soda into our wines. Studying the faces of our compagnions while gutsily sipping that brew was très amusant...

Red wine and lemonade is pretty common in Spain. Often referred to as vino de verano. Much more common than sangria, IME.

I had a red wine cocktail when I was in Hanoi once. I was staying at the Sofitel Metropole--the hotel to stay in in Hanoi--and their drinks were all based on famous writers. I seem to recall the red wine cocktail was inspired by Graham Greene.

At least when you are in Madrid and not on Mallorca or something. I like former city and its customs: they stay up late and wake up early, in the morning the always serve enough -i.e. lots- of water with breakfast; also the youths are more straightforward when they party mixing cheapish booze à la Johnny Walker with cola and lemonades half and half with the prime and clear objective of getting drunk...here is an old joke: why does Coca Cola sell so badly in the Spanish countries? Cause Coca means Cocain and cola means dick. The Castilians are cool, they have honour and pride but also good taste, are earthy, too...prouder than the Italians but less self-aware than the French; for me that is a beautiful trait.

The variation I came across was dry vermouth and lemon fanta. It's actually not bad.

Anyone got ideas for grapefruit juice? I grabbed some the other day to make a Highland Morning (1.5 oz scotch, 1 oz orange liqueur, grapefruit juice). Trouble is, they were out of the 12 oz bottles, and I had to get a full size one. So I have a lot of grapefruit juice right now.

I'm sure there are people here with some ideas, so let's hear 'em.

How about a Hemingway Daiquiri?

Good idea.

I'm gonna have to be using the stuff in larger measures than 1/4 oz, but I'm sure I'll be drinking one or two of those.

If I had any call for making a large bowl of punch, that would work pretty well.
