What are some good running shoes?

Definitely go to a store that specializes in running shoes and gear.
For what it's worth, I'm a mild overpronator, I wear Asics Gel-Kayano 14s and I'm extremely happy with them.

+1, I'm still on my Kayano 13s

Make sure to switch out running shoes after a certain number of miles depending on the brand/model. They'll look fine, but they'll have lost some shock absorption.

Everyone here has covered all the big brands of serious running shoes and already given good advice, but I'll reiterate it anyway. As someone who does a lot of distance running (wooo cross country), I, and most other people I run with swear by Asics Gel Nimbuses, or the Kayano, depending on the mechanics of your running. Brooks is definitely another brand to check out though, especially if you find that a lot of running shoes are too narrow for you; Brooks makes some really great wider running shoes. Ultimately though you should go to your local running store and try on a whole bunch of shoes, running in shoes that aren't acclimated to your feet/running style can be VERY painful and you can really hurt yourself. Check out a local, non-franchise running store and see what they have to offer/talk with someone there as they are almost certainly runners themselves. And make sure that you rotate your shoes; running shoes have an exponentially shorter lifespan when compared with 'regular' shoes.

If you slightly overpronate(sic) and have wide feet I cannot recommend Mizuno enough. Especially ElixerIII (size up 1 size). I tried Nike and Asics kayano, but I found Mizuno to be the best.

correct answer as given earlier is to go to a running store.

One thing to keep in mind is that athletic shoes are built around lasts the same as dress shoes. So a 9.5D from Nike is not the same as a 9.5D from Asics.

You need to go to a store that has a staff dedicated to running and who are knowledgeable about their subject matter. And you need to make sure that the shoe is comfortable from the immediate get-go; there should be no breaking in period needed for running shoes.

All that said, if you can get a comfortable fit I would go with Brooks. They make excellent shoes without the marketing BS. My big pet peeve with Nike is that their shoe models go in and out of production, that they change lasts all the time, and that they are generally unreliable in terms of shopping.

Brooks has a standard line of shoes that they update every year as needed. I've been ordering Brooks Adrenalines for over 10 years now and at this point just order them online without bothering to try them on. You couldn't do that with Nike.

I love my Brooks adrenaline 8's. I am slightly overpronated, and it helped...time for me to get the new ones out as I've over 400 miles on my last pair.

I take back what I said about Nike Free's. They're way too soft for my feet. Ended up with weird foot pains in both feet. Brooks makes excellent shoes.

Several years ago, when Adidas sold their Ghost ride II model, I liked them so well, I bought out the stores stock in my size. Going through three to four pair a year, I'm down to my last pair...what to do, what to do(!)? Any recommendations for an appropriate successor?
