Wearing a suit to a job interview?

So I have a job interview in 2 weeks and I have no clue what to wear. I'm going through the forums and I get the impression that going to a job interview without a suit is a pretty dumb idea. But...

  • I'm 16 years old
  • I'm applying to become a lifeguard

I don't know how formal the interview is, but the interview is taking place in the City Hall. Should I wear a suit? I'm thinking I'm not expected to wear a suit because of my young age.

no. wear charcoal grey or khaki slacks without wrinkles. blue dress shirt. maybe a blue blazer if the temp is cool (mid 70's or lower). black loafers with a nice shine

Sounds like a job through the Parks Dept. Pretty sweet paying gig for 16 yrs. It's always nice to have a suit, but for this I don't see why a nicely pressed dress shirt and slacks would be out of line. Especially if you're going to spend some money someone your age doesn't necessarily have on hand.

i took the advice of anearlier thread. DO NOT WEAR A SUIT TO AN INTERVIEW. you look like a pompus over dressed asshole. im 21, everyone there was in my age group, noone had a suit on, stared at me. they were in graphic ed hardy t shirts and jeans. i was the only one there with a degree/over qualified. the interviewer made fun of me, said "weren't you just in here with a suit? yeah you don't need that" pretty cool guy, gave me some tips for other interviews, one of which is DO NOT WEAR A SUIT!!!!! i had to run out to the car, throw my jacket in my trunk, roll up my sleeves, unbutton the top button and throw my tie in the trunk and run back into the waiting room. only wear a suit for an interview where its REALLY needed. at 16,21 or even 30 its probably not needed unless you're applying to be a CFO for a fortune 500.

i don't even think so, the job i went in for is a drafting/fabricator position for an automotive performance shop out here, i was the only certified welder, certified drafter and had a degree. my mistake was wearing a suit.

oh well, lesson learned. no more suits. maybe a nice graphic t shirt and nice fitting jeans. thats all you really need.

You're 21 and wore a suit, so you looked like you had a degree/were overqualified? Doubt it (the degree/overqualified). Thanks for trolling, come again!

Lifeguard position is by definition not formal. Wear chinos and a button-down shirt, and that's easily formal enough.

There's a difference between a professional interview and a part time job.

Completely agree here. There's definitely no need to wear a suit for an interview to be a lifeguard. Just dress comfortably and not flashy.
