Visiting New York

Hi all,

I will be visiting New York from March 14th to the 21st and since this will be my first time in NYC, would like to hear some recommendations on what to visit, eat, etc. Of course I plan to visit some stores like Carmina, John Lobb, Meermin, J. FitzPatrick, C&J, The Armoury but any other recommendations are accepted.

Also, what to wear? Here in Mexico we are already reaching 25°C (77°F) so we're already in spring/summer temps but I have no idea how NY weather is.

And if anyone has time to grab a drink or coffee or something, would be great.

Thanks!

The temps here around that time should be around 10 degrees Celsius. If you tell us what part of the city you are staying in, it would be easier to recommend restaurants. I’m terms of other sites, I would visit the Museums (Natural History, MoMA, Guggenheim etc). For mens clothing, besides the stores you mentioned check out Bergdorf’s Men on 5th avenue. Food wise you’ll have access to everything from whatever ethnic food you could want to high end dining, again it depends where you are staying and what you are doing for transportation. If you use the subways, make sure you stand with your back right up against the wall, don’t stand close to the tracks :marchal:

Thanks, Ed! I will stay at the Manhattan in Times Square. And yes, most likely I will use the subway hehe.

I feel that I'm a little out of the zone.

I took my 18-year-old nephew jean shopping yesterday and couldn't really find my way around as everything has changed. Old shops closed; new ones opened.

The only thing I could say is don't take your 18-year-old nephew jean shopping.

We have been spared the trauma of shopping lately w/ our 18 yr olds as they have discovered the 'convenience' of ordering online - you don't have to go to Tokyo for those jawnz (? not sure if I used that term correctly :confused2:), just put it on the CC! After the last 2 years it seems like the restaurant scene has undergone a big transformation. I feel a lot like lefty - stuff I loved has disappeared, tons of new openings, and just not going out much the past 24 months has left me feeling pretty out of it. Went to a spot at my wife's new office (HY) that is brand new - totally buzzing (and good), but I had never heard of it....:embar:

I would recommend this place if you want to get into a hot new place that is actually good and reasonably priced.

I’m not knowledgeable about what’s hip in NYC’s restaurant scene anymore. I guess there is always Salt Bae I’d you want to throw away a grand or two on dinner:lookaround:

I have a 14 year old that buys all his own clothes (a mix of old navy:) and designer stuff like CdG:fu:) luckily he seems to appreciate the stuff. My 23 year old couldn’t care less about clothes:thumbs-up:

That’s funny. My nephew asked if we could go to Skirt Steak.

Oh no, better spend those on shoes.

Most to the stores I want to go, mostly for shoes is to try the lasts cause I can't here in Mexico since they are not available. That way I can order some time in the future knowing my size.

So, aside from the museums, statue of Liberty, what other places are good to visit?

NYC ... anything good there?

Bit of an annoying question to a New Yorker. The city has anything you want and the more specific you are the more help you will receive.

Hehehe indeed. Well, it's my first time in New York so, I want to get to know as much as possible. But more often than not, locals new some places that are not that touristic that are amazing.

My wife and I are headed to NYC the 19-24th so we are prepping for shopping, eating and drinking. We are staying down in the Village. The last two times I've stayed there I've really enjoyed the lively scene, walking around, dropping in on places that seemed fun.

Shopping: For shoes Leffot would be a "must" visit, you mentioned the Armoury (they have their original traditional shop downtown in TruBeca but a newer one that carries more smart casual and Real McCoys up on Madison. Bergdorf, of course, or if you want to go full Italian (Fedelli, PT, Finamore, etc.) stop in to see De Corato (about half a block from the east side Armoury, there is also No Man Walks Alone (make an appointment), In SOHO there is a slowear store right next to a C&J shop (one of 2 in the city.

Eating & Drinking: I enjoy the Waverly Inn, Keens Steak House (many say it's the best) , Dante for cocktails or lunch, Pisellino for coffees or drinks, Altro Paradiso for breakfast, lunch or dinner (Milanese style Italian), Buvette, Rubi Rosa (casual Italian) etc. But, its also fun to walk around and discover a place that appeals to you.

Hit one of the jazz clubs.

It's a walking city. Break the city up into neighbourhoods and walk.

I like to take people to classic hotel bars: King Cole Bar at the St Regis, Bemelmans at the Carlyle, Blur Bar at The Algonquin, Library at the NoMad.

Others are better to advise you on eating.

Enjoy.

I Love walking NYC, and as @lefty suggested, break up NYC into neighborhoods. Dress well and do the upper East Side, go more casual in Soho/ Greenwich Village….

Plan a day in Soho, another day in the Village, then upper East side and then the West side.

Pick the shops and museums in each neighborhood then pick bars and restaurants.

When I was a young lad, my dad would take us on the Staten Island ferry back and forth to see the NYC skyline, Statue of Liberty and waterfront, then buy us a few hot dogs from vendors. Always a good day.
