using powered speakers

maybe a dumb question. when using powered speakers, at what volume do you set your device (computer, ipod, tv, etc...)?

for example, my computer has a volume control for its built-in speakers, which would also control the output to any powered speakers i would connect. so, if i connect some powered speakers would i just turn the volume all the way up to 10 on the computer and then control the volume with the volume knob on the speakers?

Yes, generally use the maximum setting. If you have a line-level output (which usually doesn't have a volume control on it), I'd use that before the headphone jack.

On line out, I set the computer to maximum.

With headphone outputs, I find a midlevel that works well. Powered speakers are generally expecting a line level signal and the headphone out on some devices can get REALLY loud

thanks. i don't know if i have a line-level out on the computer, but i'll check. there is an output jack with a strange icon i don't recognize, so perhaps that's it.

that's what the volume knob on the speakers is for. i would assume you want the highest (loudest) level going into the speakers (without causing distortion) for the best signal to noise ratio.

it depends on what kind of powered speakers we are talking about and what kind of headphone output.

Some mediocre powered speakers from an average headphone will probably work fine at max volume.

Most of the time though I would be worried about clipping when using max volume. Most recomendations I see for the ipod are in the 1/4 to 1/2 range to avoid clipping.

Keep in mind, you may not be able to pick out minor clipping if you dont have the ear for it but it will still be there (and major clipping on big bass hits and stuff might still be noticable).

Basically, if it cant get loud enough for you, the solution is not to turn up the input volume but to get stronger speakers (and think about what you are doing to your ears...because hearing damage is permanent)
