The Targets I've looked in seem only to have the dorky digital watches. What other suburban mall retailer sells better Timexes?

How about one of these: http://www.timex.com/Timex-Camper/dp...vailability=-1 I wouldn't spend $150 on a Timex mostly because if/when it breaks you're out the $150, there really isn't any repairing to be done. And the styling is similar. If you like that vintage military style, why not spend $1-200 more than your proposed budget and go with a Hamilton? That's a tough watch that'll last as long as you don't lose it, it's a classic design, and it's mechanical, which I personally prefer. They don't get much more classic than this, and it wouldn't surprise me if you could find it even cheaper elsewhere: http://www.authenticwatches.com/hami...h69419363.html However, if loss is more common than damage for you, I'd go as cheap as possible.

for awhile I was collecting vintage timex's off of ebay. I have a great Marlin from 1964 with a mechanical movement, works great........spent $40 on it. There is a small community that collects them and they are good pieces. They were mostly mechanical until the mid 60's when they went to early quartz and then the current configurations. I'd check out ebay - lots to look at even the current models and nobody is interested in faking a timex

Believe it or not, the "Camper" is what's on my wrist right now! I got it for about 20 bucks at an AAFEES (sp?) store on Ft Jackson last year (the post/base stores always do retail for about 10-20 percent less than in civilian). I like this watch a lot but want something with a slightly larger face. Er, maybe I should just be happy with what I got.

Yeh, when we was poor students, my girlfriend in 76 got me a Timex for Christmas. She bought it at a drug store for about 10 bucks and at the time I remember not feeling that impressed. But looking back, it was pretty simple and classic. Sometimes wish I'd hung onto the watch even if I let the girl go.

That works. I have a similar Eddie Bauer "field watch" (where do they get these names?). Bought it in 99 for about 35 bucks w/ employee discount. Worked for years and then the battery had to be replaced about every 2 months. Is that just what happens? I still have the watch and have thought about seeing how a new battery would work again.

No, a battery should last a hell of a lot longer than that.

Personally, I like Hamilton's style better, but You cannot get a better watch for the money than the one posted. That's an automatic, right?
