I don't disagree with you. I'm just not a huge fan of patent leather. If I can get something that looks great with the tux but can also serve other purposes, that's a bonus.

I would guess that you will not be alone if you choose to wear black calf oxfords rather than patent leather pumps. Unfortunately may do not realize that this is "incorrect". Of course, since it is widely accepted today, is it really incorrect? I'd say yes, others may say no (but they would be wrong). My point is, they won't look great with a tux, which is why I made the "selling yourself short" comment. Patent leather is correct. It really doesn't matter what your preference is, you will still be incorrect. Or will you...?

You can go with the calf and give it a high polish, like a spit shine. Most people won't be able to tell and it will look fine. Of course, if cost isn't an issue, as others have stated, patent will be best, as it completes the look.

True, a lot of people do this. The only problem is that spit shining flexible areas will cause the wax to flake off and give an unpleasant appearance. Hence the reason that when people spit shine their shoes they usually only do the toes (and heels if you are really old school).

I have a pair of opera pumps in calf not patent. My tailor could not get grosgrain in time so he used satin for the lapels and I got the bows made from similar satin.

Not the best pictures but these are a roundish toe, black calfskin. The bows are flat and satin to match the lapel.
