Got me thinking so I pulled some data. Unfortunately, the BLS doesn't differentiate commercial from residential in terms of real estate agents or brokers and tow truck drivers are lumped in with the generic "Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers", but the medians at the national level are as follows:

Real Estate Sales Agents: $49,982.40
Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers: $49,920.00

If we add include income from extended proprietors (self-employed folks who don't consider the selected job title as their primary source of income), the figures jump quite a bit higher for the real estate agents and actually goes down for the drivers:

Real Estate Sales Agents: $59,807.58
Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers: $49,441.02

By chance, I got the year-in-review mailer yesterday from the agent we used when we bought our house in Atlanta last year. He brokered $83M in sales in 2023, putting him over $800M gross in the last 10 years. I don't know how much he's paying away to Sotheby's in agency fees but at 3% commission that still seems like a pretty good living?

By chance, I got the year-in-review mailer yesterday from the agent we used when we bought our house in Atlanta last year. He brokered $83M in sales in 2023, putting him over $800M gross in the last 10 years. I don't know how much he's paying away to Sotheby's in agency fees but at 3% commission that still seems like a pretty good living?

A friend who is at a large agency but has his own "team" of like 6 agents underneath him nets between 1-1.5% after expenses.

The upside for realtors is undeniably much greater. My sense, though, is that the overwhelming majority of people in the business are not raking it in.

We used a fixed fee realtor to sell our place which was like $5K maybe then used him on the buy side as well. I wonder if these numbers realtors tout are for both sides of the process or just the sales process?
