I may have a poor (man's) watch game, but I will tell you that I really enjoy each of my humble timepieces and wouldn't change them with any Armin Strom or Bergeron or Patek Philippe Grande Complications. Maybe I'm not a true watch enthusiast, because my interest is mainly put on aesthetics and engineering is only secondary.
No need to feel inadequate or insecure. When I log in to shitpost here, I do it with the chorus of Mambo No. 5 in my mind. Keep on truckin, Dorian. I need you in my life.

Don’t aesthetics have something to do with it though? Or are you simply considering “value”? For me, aquanaut > nautilus > royal oak… purely based on what I think looks best.

I guess if you don’t have a preference between them then I agree, I’d rather have a RO at 1/2 the price of a nautilus.
They do but I like the look of both. So when they’re tied on aesthetics it comes down to brand and price. I prefer Patek to AP and I don’t like the flashy/gaudy stigma around the Royal Oak as a watch but when I think purely on the merits of the watch in isolation I think I prefer the RO to the Nautilus.

Nothing is going to stray me from a 3940 but... I'm starting to reconsider a Nautilus. I'm seeing Royal Oaks for in the 26-32k range and it's hard to just imagine that a 3800 (which is the cheapest of the Nautilus line) is worth more than double that. And it's the 2nd child in the Genta lineage. Why would I pay x2 for what isn't the best-in-class watch? Nothing outdoes a Patek Grand Complication... so it's hard to imagine the Royal Oak is outdone by the Nautilus for double the price.
Not quite sure what you mean by the Nautilus is the second child in the Genta lineage. Just to clarify, Genta had designed several other watches prior to the RO and Nautilus, such as the UG Polerouter, Omega Constellation, Rolex King Midas, and Patek Golden Ellipse . The Nautilus came after the RO in terms of luxury sports watches, but was released the same year as the IWC Jumbo SL Ingenieur. Which was designed or released 2nd vs 3rd, I'm not sure if anyone knows.

Everyone has their own view on whether a RO is out done by a Nautilus or vice versa. I don't think it actually has much to do with price. I know guys who hate the Nautilus and say it looks like a TV from the 1950s. I know guys who say the RO looks too steampunk, and I know guys who hate both watches.

I've looked at both, and my Dad owned a 3800 in the 1980s and 90s. To me, the RO is the original, it created a genre of watches that didn't previously exist. There are other great watches in that genre, but none were as ground breaking as the RO. I also think it is the best looking of the bunch. I'd own a Nautilus (5712A/1) in addition to a RO, but not instead of one.

Personally, I wouldn't own a 3800. Today, I find it a bit small and dainty compared to a 5711 or 3712/5712, but YMMV.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
